Anthropic takes $5B from Amazon and pledges $100B in cloud spending in return

Anthropic announced On Monday, Amazon announced that it has agreed to invest a new $5 billion, bringing Amazon’s total investment in the company to $13 billion. For its part, Anthropic has agreed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS over the next decade, acquiring up to 5 GW of new computing capacity to train and run Claude.

The deal mirrors an agreement Amazon made with OpenAI just two months ago, when it participated in a $110 billion funding round — a $50 billion contribution — that valued the ChatGPT maker at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion. That deal was also structured in part as cloud infrastructure services rather than outright cash.

At the heart of this deal are Amazon’s custom chips: Graviton (a low-power CPU) and Trainium (an Nvidia competitor and an AI accelerator chip). The Anthropic deal specifically covers Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, even though Trainium4 chips are currently unavailable. The latest chip, Trainium3, was released in December. Additionally, Anthropic has secured the option to purchase capacity on future Amazon chips as they become available.

We’ll see if this news is a teaser for Anthropic announcing a new round of funding. VCs have reportedly offered up the AI business capital in a deal that would value it at $800 billion or more.
