Europe’s best birdwatching destinations | News

New research from travel insurance experts AllClear has revealed the best birdwatching destinations in Europe.
The researchers analyzed globally recognized birdwatching hotspots based on eight metrics: the number of bird species, the number of notable species, a notable species score based on prevalence, average annual temperature, average wind speed, average annual precipitation, distance to the nearest airport and estimated daily tourist costs.

Sweden’s ‘Migration Corridor of the Continent’ has been declared the best place in Europe for birdwatching

Sweden’s Falsterbo Peninsula tops the European rankings with a score of 50.7 out of 100, making it one of the continent’s most celebrated migration hotspots. England’s Titchwell Marsh follows closely in second place with a score of 50.2, while Scotland’s Fair Isle comes third with a score of 49.7.

England dominate the overall rankings, claiming five of the top 15 places, with Titchwell Marsh leading the way in second, followed by Minsmere in fifth (46.4/100), Rutland Water in seventh (44.7/100), Slimbridge Wetland Center and Bowling Green Marsh in joint eighth (44.3/100).

Scotland also features twice with Fair Isle in third place and Loch Gruinart in 15th (36.4/100).

Greece ranks twice, with the Kalloni Salt Pans on the island of Lesbos taking fourth place (47.7/100), while Lake Kerkini National Park comes in sixth (45.2/100). Spanish entries include the Ebro Delta in 12th place (38.2/100) and the Monfragüe National Park in 14th (36.5/100), rounding off a strong Southern European performance alongside Portugal’s Ria Formosa National Park in tenth (42.4/100).

Falsterbo Peninsula, Sweden – ‘Best Birding’ score of 50.7/100
Sweden’s Falsterbo Peninsula tops the European rankings with breathtaking sightings of birds of prey, finches and warblers passing through in huge numbers. With an average spend of €111 per day, Falsterbo is one of the more expensive destinations on the rankings, but for those willing to invest the reward is a world-class birdwatching spectacle that would be hard to match anywhere else on the continent.

Titchwell Marsh, England – ‘Best Birding’ score of 50.2/100
Titchwell Marsh in Norfolk takes second place. It is widely regarded as one of England’s most popular RSPB reserves, where a mix of reedbeds, freshwater lagoons and sandy beaches create a wide range of habitats. It attracts everything from marsh harriers and bitterns to avocets and wading birds.

Fair Isle, Scotland – ‘Best Birding’ score of 49.7/100
The remote Scottish island of Fair Isle claims third place in the survey. Its isolated location in the North Sea makes it a natural landing point for migratory birds, and the thrill of not knowing what will happen next is exactly what draws enthusiasts back year after year. With a high daily price of 123 euros (£113) per day, Fair Isle is the most expensive destination in the European rankings, but it will rarely disappoint those who make the trip.

Kalloni Salt Pans, Lesbos, Greece – ‘Best Birding’ score of 47.7
Kalloni salt pans on the Greek island of Lesbos are fourth in the European rankings. With an average temperature of 18°C and a modest average rainfall of just 45.3mm, Lesvos enjoys some of the most reliably pleasant weather of any destination in the European rankings, making it a particularly attractive option for those who prefer birdwatching in the sun rather than wrapping up against the wind and cold.

Minsmere, England – Birdwatching score of 46.4
With a mild average temperature of 11°C and the lowest average rainfall of any destination in Europe’s top 15, Minsmere in Suffolk comes in fifth place, with conditions here among the most comfortable and predictable on the list. From the booming call of the bittern echoing across the reed beds to avocets making their way along the coastline, Minsmere offers a birdwatching experience that continues to attract visitors from across the country and beyond.

For those looking for a rewarding yet soothing way to experience the natural world, bird watching offers an immersive outdoor adventure that can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, without the physical demands of more strenuous activities.

“However, if you have a medical condition, careful planning is important.
