Massport opens America’s first remote airport terminal, powered by SITA | News

Passengers from Boston Logan on select Delta Air Lines and JetBlue flights can check in, drop off their bags and go through TSA security in Framingham, Massachusetts before ever reaching the airport. The Logan Airport Remote Terminal in Framingham, launched today by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), is the first non-airport security checkpoint in North America. SITA’s widely used check-in technology is the platform that makes this work.

Massport faced a challenge familiar to major hub airports across the country. US airports welcomed one billion passengers in 2025, while annual throughput was expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2040. Building more terminal capacity in Logan was not a realistic answer. Massport needed a smarter solution: bring the airport experience closer to where passengers live while reducing pressure on roads, curbs and security lines.

SITA gave Massport the technology to do this. By deploying its widely used check-in platform at the Framingham location, Massport was able to establish a fully functional terminal processing environment off the airport campus. Passengers check in, print baggage tags and receive their boarding passes in Framingham. By the time they board the special secure bus to Logan, check-in is complete.

Establishing a credible, passenger-ready terminal in a non-traditional space was its own design challenge. Through its CCM activities, SITA provided both the physical design of the check-in counters and the technology that runs within them, providing Massport with a single partner for the entire check-in environment rather than having to coordinate between multiple suppliers.

“The industry has measured airport capacity in gates and runways for decades, but the real bottleneck at most major hubs happens before you ever see a plane. It’s at check-ins, bag drops and the security line that we see the most anxiety among passengers. What Massport has done in Framingham is move those friction points 20 miles upstream, reducing the strain on airport facilities and passenger anxiety levels. Once you can do that, the airport itself becomes significantly larger without adding even one square foot,” said Shawn Gregor, president of SITA. America.

The program is built on a multi-partner model with Massport at the center. Landlines power and operate the dedicated secure bus between Framingham and Logan. TSA provides security screening at the remote location to the same federal standard as Logan’s main checkpoints. SITA’s platform connects the airline check-in process and the facility, so every passenger is airline-ready before he or she boards the bus.

The Framingham pilot builds on the Logan Express network, which carried more than 2.7 million passengers in 2025, with Framingham as its busiest location. The pilot will continue throughout the summer, with Massport planning to expand access to additional airlines over time. The SITA platform is built to scale with that growth and can onboard new airlines and new locations without rebuilding the underlying infrastructure.
