Writers Guild requires bribery research after jacket cancellation

The Writers Guild of America called on that Paramount was examined for bribery by the New York State Attorney General after the announcement of Thursday that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” has been canceled.

In the statement, the trade union says that it has “great worries” that the move may be intended to buy the Trump administration to approve the upcoming Acquisition of Paramount by Skydance. Colbert is a frequent critic of Trump, after referred to Paramount’s recent $ 16 million settlement with Donald Trump as “a big bribery” only three days before the cancellation.

Read the statement completely below.

On July 2, Paramount agreed to arrange an unfounded lawsuit against 60 minutes and CBS News by President Trump for $ 16 million. On July 15, during a regular show of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert went into the air and the settlement called a “Big Fat-Steekdekenming” in exchange for a favorable decision about the proposed merger between Paramount and Skydance, a complaint that is currently being investigated in California.

Less than 48 hours later, on July 17, Paramount canceled the late show with Stephen Colbert, a show that first performed in his time slot, giving vague references to the “financial performance” of the program the only explanation. For ten years, the show is one of the most successful, beloved and profitable programs on CBS, and entertains an audience of millions on late night television, on streaming services and on social media.

Given the recent capitulation of Paramount to President Trump in the CBS News -Rechtszaak, the Writers Guild of America is very concerned that the cancellation of The Late Show is a bribery, which sacrifices freedom of expression to sacrifice the favor at the Trump administration, since the company is looking for the fusion of the Fusieie.

Cancellation is part of the company, but a company that ends a show in evil faith because of explicit or implicit political pressure is dangerous and unacceptable in a democratic society. The decision of Paramount comes against a background of non -repellent attacks on a free press by President Trump, by lawsuits against CBS and ABC, endangered lawsuits of media organizations with critical reporting and the unconscious overfuning of PBS and NPR.

The Writers Guild of America calls on New York State attorney -general Letitia James, no stranger to the prosecution of Trump for illegal business practices, to become a member of California and to start an investigation into potential misconduct at Paramount. We call on our chosen leaders to keep those who are responsible for accountability, to demand answers about why this beloved program was canceled and to ensure that Colbert and his writers were not censored because of their views or the whims of the president.

In the meantime, the Writers Guild of America will support our members during the late show with Stephen Colbert and in the late-night industry while they speak truth and we will investigate all potential legal and political ways to fight for our members in the aftermath of this decision.
