United Airlines launches non-stop daily seasonal service between Glasgow and Newark/New York | News

United Airlines has launched its non-stop daily seasonal service between Glasgow and its Newark/New York hub, marking the arrival of the first flight to Glasgow Airport. United is the only US airline to offer non-stop service between Glasgow and the United States. The route marks United’s return to Glasgow, which the airline previously served until October 2019, and is the first scheduled service by a US airline between Glasgow and the United States since 2019.
The returning service builds on United’s existing services from Scotland: daily flights year-round from Edinburgh to Newark/New York, almost year-round, to daily flights between Edinburgh and Washington DC, as well as a daily seasonal service between Edinburgh and Chicago O’Hare. United is the only airline to offer a daily service between Scotland and the US all year round, offering more seats and flights from Scotland to the US than any other airline. In the summer of 2026, it will operate up to four non-stop flights per day from Scotland to the US.
“We are delighted to return to Glasgow with the launch of our service to Newark/New York, further underlining the importance of Scotland within United’s global route network,” said Karolien De Hertogh, Director Sales UK and Ireland, United Airlines. “With more seats and flights from Scotland to the United States than any other airline, our customers in Scotland can enjoy even greater travel choice and the ability to connect seamlessly to more than 220 further destinations in the Americas via our US hubs, while US travelers can more easily fly to Glasgow and enjoy the city’s world-class museums, iconic architecture, historic pubs, parks and gardens, or travel outside the city and explore the greater Highlands.”
“We are pleased to welcome the return of United Airlines direct service between Glasgow and New York, restoring one of our most popular long-haul routes,” said Kam Jandu, CEO of AGS Airports. “The route has always been in high demand, previously carrying significant passenger numbers, as well as key Scottish exports such as whiskey and seafood. Passengers can also enjoy access to the expanded North American destination via Newark Airport, making onward connectivity much easier than before.
“This new service is a significant boost to connectivity, providing a vital link for travelers from the west coast of Scotland, while supporting inbound tourism, allowing more visitors to experience Scotland’s world-famous attractions, including golf, whiskey and spectacular scenery.
“This achievement reflects our team’s continued efforts and strong collaboration with partners across the Glasgow City Region as we remain focused on improving Glasgow’s network connectivity and delivering a best-in-class passenger experience as part of our £350 million investment programme.”
“This is excellent news for Glasgow and for visitors and business travelers on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Councilor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of the Glasgow City Region Cabinet. “The United States is one of our most important international markets, and this new direct service will make it even easier for people to visit Glasgow, do business here and experience all that our city and the wider region have to offer.
“It strengthens Glasgow’s global connectivity, supports economic growth and foreign investment, and underlines the city’s position as an outward-looking, internationally connected destination. Congratulations to our partners at Glasgow Airport and United Airlines on the launch of this important new route.”
The new service between Glasgow and Newark/New York is part of United Airlines’ broader summer 2026 program and underlines its position as the leading US airline across the Atlantic, serving more destinations than any other US airline. By summer 2026, United will be the only U.S. airline flying nonstop flights to four new destinations from its Newark/New York hub: Split, Croatia; Bari, Italy; Glasgow, Scotland and Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The airline is also adding its first service between Washington/Dulles and Reykjavik, Iceland, as well as a new year-round nonstop daily service from Newark/New York to Seoul, South Korea.
As the leader in U.S. flights across the Atlantic, United will continue that momentum by serving a total of 44 destinations across the Atlantic by 2026 and offering nearly 770 weekly transatlantic roundtrip flights by summer 2026. In addition to four new destinations, United will continue to serve eight destinations in 2026 from its largest-ever expansion last summer, including seasonal service to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Nuuk, Greenland; Palermo, Italy; Bilbao, Spain; Madeira, Portugal; Faro, Portugal; and continues its already year-round service from Puerto Escondido, Mexico and Kaohsiung.
Around the world, United will offer up to nearly 930 daily flights to and from more than 150 international destinations by 2026 – including 43 that no other U.S. airline serves.
