Rising demand for first-class accommodation and wellness-oriented travel is reshaping the Alpine holiday market. Luxury holidays in the Alps are entering a new phase, and it has less to do with skiing than with wellness.

The Alps have been marketed primarily as a winter sports destination for decades. But a combination of changing travel habits, rising demand for premium accommodation and growing interest in wellness is quietly transforming the way the region positions itself for British travellers.

Recent research from ABTA highlights the scale of the shift towards more expensive travel among British holidaymakers. According to ABTA’s Travel Trends 2025 report, 35% of British travelers holidaying abroad stayed in five-star accommodation, up from 30% the year before, one of the clearest indicators of premiumisation in the UK travel market.

The trend is even more evident among younger travelers. ABTA found that 47% of Gen Z travelers stayed in five-star accommodation during their holiday abroad, up from 37% the year before. The survey also found that 22% of Gen Z travelers plan to spend more on vacations specifically to upgrade their accommodations, compared to 14% of Millennials, 11% of Baby Boomers and 8% of Gen X.

At the same time, well-being is becoming an important driver for travel decisions. Mintel research shows that 61% of British travelers aged 16 to 34 are planning a holiday with a wellness element, reflecting growing interest in experiences focused on recovery, nature, sleep and physical wellbeing.

Taken together, these trends are helping to reposition the Alps as more than a traditional ski destination. ABTA also notes that winter travel is evolving beyond purely sporting travel, with wellness and spa holidays, alongside ski and snowboard holidays, being highlighted as areas of increasing importance within winter travel.

For the alpine hospitality sector, this shift presents a clear opportunity: combining high-quality accommodation with cutting-edge spa facilities, nature-led experiences and active outdoor lifestyles to attract a new generation of wellness-focused travelers.

Across Austria, a number of mountain resorts are already reflecting this wider repositioning of the mountains as year-round wellness destinations.
