Shangri-La Kunming debuts as new gateway for cultural discovery | News

Shangri-La Group (“Shangri-La” or “the Group”) announces the grand opening of Shangri-La Kunming, a new gateway to Yunnan’s cultural discovery, where design-led storytelling, tea traditions and immersive moments are inspired by the region’s landscapes and artistry. Rooted in the concept of a ‘Tea Merchant’s Mansion’, the hotel combines Shangri-La’s signature Asian hospitality with Yunnan’s rich local culture, bringing the art and fun of Asian hosting to life for guests exploring ‘The Best of Yunnan’.

Designed by internationally acclaimed AvroKO, Shangri La Kunming draws inspiration from the elegant world of a tea merchant’s private home, where guests were once welcomed with quiet grace. From the cultural souvenirs displayed in the “Secret Garden” to the lobby installations Woven Mountains and Woven Spring, every element reflects Kunming’s poetic landscape and cultural richness. On the 18th floor, the Horizon Club Lounge is warmed by a red copper fireplace, inviting guests to gather, linger and enjoy a cup of tea. Along the corridors, stained glass windows provide “a view at every step – clear yet connected,” allowing guests to experience Yunnan’s signature charm in the soft play of light and shadow throughout the day.

Excellent accommodations with a local touch

The hotel features 75 rooms and suites, each with Horizon Club Lounge privileges. The main highlights of the room type are:

Horizon Executive Room (55 sqm): A palette of greenery brings Kunming’s eternal ‘spring’ atmosphere indoors.
Horizon Premier Suite & Horizon 270° City View Suite (72 sqm): Inspired by Yunnan’s biodiversity, the space weaves in vibrant imagery, with butterflies flying and birds perched on branches, to create a tranquil, sophisticated residential escape.
Rose Blossom Romantic Suite (120 sqm): Inspired by Yunnan roses, details from three-dimensional floral embroidery to a bathtub decorated with flowers set the stage for proposals, honeymoons and anniversary celebrations.
Shangri La Tea Sanctuary Residence Suite (192 sqm): Rooted in the spirit of tea culture, earth tones reflect the beauty of tea-covered mountains, complemented by rare teas and handcrafted teaware, bringing natural vitality and Yunnan’s cultural charm together in one private residence.

The hotel also offers carefully curated themed stays for families. The Wildwood Camper Family Themed Suite recreates the tropical splendor of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, with separate rooms for parents and children, specially designed for families with children aged 3 to 8 years. Little ones can look forward to a bunk bed with a slide, themed toy boxes and role-play costumes, while murals of rainforest flora and fauna reveal hidden UV-painted details that inspire a sense of discovery. The Questers Family Room continues the journey with learning activities and a custom Kunming storybook, inviting children to explore, imagine and learn.

A feast for the senses: enjoy Yunnan’s natural bounty

Hailing from Yunnan’s most celebrated growing regions, the hotel’s culinary team brings the province’s abundant produce to Shangri La’s dining experiences. At the Horizon Club Lounge, guests can enjoy naturally fermented Xuanwei ham from 2,100 meters above sea level, alongside specialty coffee grown in the world’s ‘golden belt’, wild mushrooms and rose flower pastries – a tasting that captures the flavors of Yunnan in one go.

Created by Shangri La Group in collaboration with SG Group, SUMA Bar combines Dian-inspired aesthetics with local storytelling and flavor innovation for a distinctive, destination-focused experience. The bar team highlights native Yunnan ingredients on a menu of original pours – from wine made with meltwater from the Meili Snow Mountains, to craft gins infused with rainforest botanicals, and whiskeys inspired by the landscapes of Mount Cangshan and Erhai Lake, so that every glass feels like a tour of Yunnan’s terroir.

At the hotel’s Chinese restaurant, Dian Voyage Yunnan Cuisine, Michelin and Black Pearl-recognized chefs Liu Xin and Yang Bolin present a new expression of modern Yunnan cuisine. Guided by the principle of Ancient Tea Horse Road hospitality (a tradition of warm welcome and thoughtful hosting) and a ‘highland small-batch’ approach, the team carefully sources distinctive ingredients from lesser-known highland origins, balancing age-old flavors with thoughtful innovation and refinement, with the ambition to set a new benchmark for the quality of Yunnan cuisine.

Immersive tea experiences and tailor-made privileges

As ‘Tea Merchant’s Mansion’, the hotel places Yunnan’s tea culture at the heart of the guest experience, welcoming guests to the ‘Secret Garden’ with a seasonal tea to help them relax after the trip. On the 18th floor, the Horizon Club Lounge hosts Tea Gathering Experiences, where professional tea masters curate personalized tea selections. Guests can also book the intangible cultural heritage experience Dali Bai Three Course Tea, a traditional ceremony that unfolds in three flavors: first bitter, then sweet, followed by a lingering aftertaste.

The dedicated “Personal Host” service further enriches the stay with personal recommendations and real estate stories, guiding guests through the design concept and art collection woven throughout the hotel’s spaces.

An urban oasis and versatile event spaces

For relaxation and gatherings, the hotel features an indoor heated pool inspired by the tropical rainforest landscape, a 24-hour fitness center (including a yoga room) and more than 2,000 square feet of event space, culminating in a 1,000-square-foot pillarless grand ballroom for premier meetings, weddings, parties and social occasions.

Shangri-La Kunming and JEN Kunming by Shangri-La are jointly managed under a dual-brand project model to meet the diverse needs of different guests. From now until June 30, 2026, guests who book the ‘Luxury Escape’ package via the hotel’s website (https://www.shangri-la.com/en/kunming/shangrila/), the WeChat Mini Program or the Shangri-La Circle App can enjoy Horizon Club Lounge privileges for two (including buffet breakfast, happy hour and select local snacks all day), as well as an experience for two at SUMA Bar and 15% discount.
