CPB closes after the federal financing was drawn

The public broadcaster company has announced that it will be closed after almost six decades.
The relocation of CPB – which has provided financing to PBS and NPR – to settle down comes after President Trump has led a successful effort to defend public media. In mid -July, the congress approved the Trump’s dissolution package, which has reduced $ 1.1 billion for CPB for CPB for the next two years.
The CPB announcement also follows the release of the Tax 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Reled Agencies (Labor-H) of the Senate Committee of the Senate Committee, which for the first time excludes the financing for CPB for CPB.
CPB was founded by the Congress via the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967. The mission of the Private, not-for-for-profit Corporation is “to guarantee universal access to non-commercial, high-quality content and telecommunication services,” said its website.
“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who have called, written and requested the congress to maintain federal financing for CPB, we are now confronted with the difficult reality of closing our activities,” said CPB president and CEO Patricia Harrison in a statement. “CPB continues to work for fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care.”
CPB announced its employees on Friday that most personnel positions will be completed on September 30, 2025 with the end of the tax year. A small transition team will remain until January 2026 to guarantee a responsible and orderly conclusion of operations. This team will focus on compliance, final benefits and solution of financial obligations in the long term, including guaranteeing continuity for music rights and royalties that remain essential for the public media system.
The CPB board of directors and management work closely on the legal, financial and operational requirements of the closure. CPB offers regular updates and guidance to stations and producers that navigate through the deep challenges.
