Brits are turning the ‘microcation’ trend into a summer travel habit | News

Earlier this year, travel experts highlighted the rise of the ‘microcation’: shorter, more mindful vacations of just a few days. New booking data from SuperEscapes now suggests the trend is impacting the way Brits travel this summer, with holidaymakers increasingly swapping the traditional week abroad for shorter beach breaks.

SuperEscapes.co.uk reports a 61% increase in searches/bookings for three to five night holidays compared to the same period last year, while demand for seven to ten night stays has declined. The trend, first associated with city breaks and long weekends, is now increasingly affecting summer beach trips, with demand for sun destinations within short distances high.

The most popular destinations for shorter summer holidays are the Balearic Islands, mainland Spain and Croatia, where flights take just two to three hours, making them ideal for long weekends or shorter stays without taking up too much holiday leave.

The shift to shorter sun breaks reflects broader travel behavior. ANTOR’s Destination Trends Report 2025/26, which represents destinations around the world, identified growing demand among British travelers for great value short beach breaks, while demand for city breaks in northern and central Europe declined, partly due to rising accommodation costs.

Rather than completely replace the traditional summer vacation, many travelers choose to spread their travel budget over two or three shorter trips during the year, with flexibility, spontaneity and manageable costs paramount. SuperEscapes data also shows that travelers are increasingly booking at shorter notice, opting for destinations that offer reliable sunshine without long-haul travel.

“The idea of taking shorter, more conscious holidays is not new, but we see it turning out differently this summer. Traditionally, shorter trips were mainly city trips, while people are now increasingly booking beach holidays for three, four or five nights.”

“For many travelers it’s about flexibility and making sure holidays fit in with modern life. Instead of committing to one big trip, people are opting for shorter holidays that still provide sunshine and a good reset.”

“We are also seeing people booking later and traveling more spontaneously, especially to destinations just a few hours’ drive from the UK.”
