British Airways celebrates 80 years of flying to the United States | News

British Airways today celebrates 80 years of service between the United Kingdom and the United States, marking a milestone that began with the first-ever transatlantic route from London to New York.

Eighty years ago, British Overseas Airways Corporations’ (BOAC) first commercial landplane service from London arrived at New York’s LaGuardia. The flight lasted almost 20 hours via Shannon and Gander and was operated by a Lockheed Constellation 049.

Since BOAC’s first flight in 1946, the airline has been at the forefront of transatlantic travel, operating the supersonic Concorde, inventing the lie-flat business bed and building one of the most sustainable and extensive transatlantic networks in the world. From early long-haul flights to today’s modern fleet and extensive network, British Airways has continually evolved while remaining true to its commitment to service and a uniquely British experience.

Today, New York – the airline’s first US destination – remains the centerpiece of its global network and the airline now serves 27 destinations across the United States, connecting millions of customers annually for business, leisure and major global events.

Sean Doyle, Chairman and CEO of British Airways, said: “Achieving 80 years of flying to the United States is a truly proud moment for British Airways. From our very first flight between London and New York to the extensive network we operate today, our commitment to connecting people, cultures and trade across the Atlantic has never been stronger.

“This year is especially important as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary and hosts a global football spectacle. We are proud to bring fans and travelers together for these historic moments as we continue to invest in our customer experience to shape the future of transatlantic travel.”

Investing in the future of the American customer experience

Looking ahead, British Airways has announced significant investments in its lounge offering in the United States, improving the experience for customers during their travel.

At Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), the airline is investing $15 million in a complete redevelopment of its lounge, introducing a new design concept inspired by New Jersey’s coastline and the state’s industrial heritage, alongside British Airways’ signature style. Working with global architecture and design firm Gensler, the transformed lounge will feature a new full-service bar, enhanced dining and food service areas and a significantly improved Concorde dining area for eligible customers.

Customers will also benefit from fully renovated bathrooms and shower facilities and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the runway, creating a brighter and more open environment. Locally sourced materials, furnishings and finishes will be incorporated to reflect the Garden State. Development is expected to begin later this year, with the new lounge set to reopen in 2027.

British Airways has also earmarked plans for future lounge investments in Boston and San Francisco in 2027.

These projects are part of a wider investment program across British Airways’ global lounge network, including at London Heathrow and other locations in the US, as the airline continues to improve its ground experience.

A continuing legacy

Looking to the future, British Airways continues its multi-billion dollar transformation program to improve every aspect of the customer journey. This includes the rollout of super-fast Starlink Wi-Fi, delivering faster and more reliable onboard connectivity; the strengthening of operational performance, with improved punctuality, supported by the latest technology; and the unveiling of the new First Cabin design, which redefines premium travel with greater privacy and comfort.
