MAGALUF COMPLETES THE TRANSFORMATION OF ITS BEACH PROMENADE | News

Magaluf has marked another major milestone in its long-term regeneration with the official inauguration of the transformed Gabriel Escarrer Julià seaside promenade, celebrating the completion of a two-phase redevelopment project that has reimagined one of the resort’s most iconic public spaces.
The transformation began in November 2024, when Calvià Town Hall launched the first phase of the redevelopment, delivering 650 meters of new boulevard as part of the ‘Magaluf for All’ initiative. The project introduced low-impact dune systems, drought-resistant planting, new palm trees and innovative water management infrastructure, creating a more sustainable and environmentally sensitive public space while maintaining uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean Sea.
The landmark project reinforces Magaluf’s continued evolution into a modern Mediterranean destination, combining high-quality public spaces, sustainability and accessibility with a growing focus on culture, gastronomy, sports and year-round tourism.
The transformed promenade extends 2.3 kilometers along the coastline, offering a vibrant, fully accessible waterfront, designed for residents and visitors alike. The redevelopment includes improved pedestrian areas, improved accessibility, enhanced public spaces and stronger connections along the entire beach, creating a more welcoming environment and encouraging visitors to spend more time exploring the destination.
The project also includes the renovation of Francesc Pujol Terrasa Street and improvements to the surrounding public spaces, further enhancing the overall visitor experience while supporting Calvià’s long-term vision of sustainable tourism.
The second phase, officially inaugurated on May 20, 2026, delivered another 286 meters of redeveloped promenade, in addition to improvements to Francesc Pujol Terrasa Street and Miguel Altoaguirre Street. The full redevelopment, supported by €3 million from the Balearic Islands Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), represents an investment of €6.2 million, co-financed through ITS funding and the European Union’s Next GenerationEU recovery programme.
Sustainability remained at the core of the project during both phases. Protected dune systems planted with native species, rainwater harvesting and treatment systems and seawater beach showers have been introduced to minimize water consumption while preserving the area’s natural environment.
The redevelopment, made possible by investments from Spain’s Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) and the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery programme, is part of Calvià’s wider strategy to diversify its tourism offer, extend the visitor season beyond the traditional summer months and create a destination that benefits both residents and visitors.
Juan Antonio Amengual, mayor of Calvià, said:
“The completion of the Gabriel Escarrer Julià Promenade marks another important step in the regeneration of Magaluf. This investment reflects our commitment to creating high-quality public spaces that improve the quality of life for residents while improving the visitor experience. Together with wider investments in the municipality, projects like this help position Calvià as a sustainable, year-round destination that looks confidently to the future.”
The promenade is named after Gabriel Escarrer Julià, founder of Meliá Hotels International, in recognition of his long-standing contribution to the development of tourism in Magaluf and his vision for the future of the destination.
More than a new promenade, the project represents another tangible milestone in the ongoing regeneration of Magaluf, reflecting years of sustained investment that continues to improve the destination while strengthening its appeal to a wider range of visitors.
A celebration of Magaluf’s new chapter
To celebrate the transformation of Magaluf, symbolized by the completion of the new boulevard, Calvià organized the largest public celebration in recent years. Supported by Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) funding, the weekend program showcased the destination’s growing cultural and experiential offering, while inviting residents and visitors to enjoy the revitalized waterfront.
The new promenade was officially inaugurated on Saturday 27 June with a spectacular public party featuring an open-air concert by the Balearic Symphony Orchestra and an innovative drone show over the Bay of Magaluf. With more than 9,500 people, it was the largest turnout for a free, publicly funded event in Calvià.
As part of Calvià is Cinema, iconic film scores including Star Wars, Schindler’s List and Sound of Music were performed before 400 synchronized drones lit up the night sky in celebration of the destination’s transformation.
The festivities continued throughout the weekend alongside the second edition of GastroFira Magaluf, with a dozen restaurants along the promenade offering special menus and culinary experiences that highlighted the destination’s evolving gastronomic scene.
Sunday’s program welcomed the Atlántida Mallorca Film Fest to Calvia for the first time, with free screenings followed by live music performances.
The inauguration is also part of Calvià’s Year of Cinema 2026, celebrating the municipality’s rich audiovisual heritage while reinforcing its growing reputation as a destination for culture, creativity and year-round tourism.
Together, the weekend’s events reinforced the cultural and experiential positioning of the renewed Magaluf Coast, encouraging thousands of Mallorcans and visitors to rediscover Magaluf and establishing it as a vibrant meeting place for residents and visitors and a fitting stage for world-class events throughout the year.
