The Ivory Debuts in Koreatown | News

A new hospitality concept is quietly redefining the boutique hotel landscape in Los Angeles. Located in the heart of Koreatown, The Ivory is an intimate 48-room urban retreat designed to offer guests a sense of belonging and thoughtful design in one of the city’s most dynamic neighborhoods.

Founded by veteran developer and hospitality operator Rachel Gerstein, The Ivory was conceived in response to a perceived gap in Los Angeles’ hospitality landscape: a space that feels elevated yet welcoming and exclusive yet deeply human. Rooted in the philosophy of ‘home, but better’, the property combines the warmth of a private home with the sophistication and global sensibility of a boutique hotel. The design-led approach draws on a range of international influences, from the rooftops of Mexico City and Lima to the understated elegance of London, the soft colors of the South of France and the subtle whimsy of Portofino – all carefully reinterpreted through a distinctly Los Angeles lens.

“Koreatown – and Los Angeles more broadly – offers an incredible sense of energy, culture and constant movement,” says Gerstein. “With The Ivory, I wanted to create a place where guests can truly exhale – a tucked-away sanctuary that feels intimate and intentional, without ever falling into pretentiousness. Every detail is rooted in the kind of experience I seek when traveling: thoughtful design, meaningful connections to local and emerging art, engaging programming, abundant natural light, and an overarching sense of sanctuary.”
The design sensitivity is reflected in the entire interior, which is reflected in warm oak herringbone floors and a richly layered material palette. In the communal areas, moments of color and pattern introduce vibrancy and character, while the guest rooms transition to soft, tonal hues that are deliberately simple, clean and luxurious, supporting both short visits and longer stays with equal ease. Layered lighting, curated playlists and a custom Air Aroma fragrance with warm, spicy and comforting notes of pink pepper, juniper berries, cashmere, iris, white flowers, magnolia, sandalwood and amber further enhance the experience and create a sensory environment that evokes long-lasting calm and ease.

With its intimate scale, The Ivory prioritizes personalization and intuitive service. Daily rituals, including morning bread service and evening cookie service, are seamlessly woven into the guest experience, reinforcing the property’s residential ethos. Public areas, from the lobby lounge and courtyard to the pool, rooftop terrace and 24-hour fitness center, are designed to promote connection while maintaining privacy and discretion.

The culinary identity reflects The Ivory’s ‘high-low’ philosophy, combining refined comfort with moments of playful indulgence, from Kaluga caviar service with traditional accompaniments to an evolving menu of small plates including pate du jour, rare artisan cheeses and bruschetta. A well-considered drinks program featuring classic cocktails, champagne and a wine list with an emphasis on California producers rounds out the offering, complemented by thoughtful, simple desserts.

In the coming months, this sensibility will extend to a broader cultural program spanning food and drink, art and music, with panel discussions, tastings, chef collaborations, pop-ups, intimate performances and rotating exhibitions designed to engage both guests and Los Angeles’ creative community.

A pillar of the Ivory experience, The Ivory’s arts program is led by Art Director Matt Scheele and focuses on engaging and celebrating Los Angeles’ creative community, with an evolving collection and cultural programming designed to connect guests more deeply with the city. Works by notable Los Angeles-born or based artists, photographers, and sculptors such as Urs Fischer, Richard Misrach, Rafa Esparza, Rebecca Morris, and Ruby Neri anchor the collection, while Daydream, a luminous, site-specific installation in cast mirror and glass by New York-based artist Rob Wynne, emerges as a highlight of the space. Suspended from a custom mural created specifically for the space, the work greets guests upon arrival in the lobby lounge, capturing and refracting light in an ethereal, immersive way. It changes subtly throughout the day and invites moments of pause, reflection and quiet wonder.
Designed to meet guests wherever they are, The Ivory offers a seamless, highly personalized approach to service that combines convenience and intention. Upon arrival, guests can choose from a fully digital, self-guided check-in or a more traditional, tailor-made welcome led by the on-site team. This reflects a broader philosophy of intuitive, people-centered hospitality that adapts to individual needs. The service is warm, discreet and profound, allowing each stay to unfold with a natural sense of comfort, ease and personal rhythm.
