Goal setting and well-being

A Novotel global survey of 9,000 travelers in 8 countries around the world found that more than half of travelers (50.2%) regularly set personal goals for the year, while almost one in five (19%) set no goals at all. This highlights the diverse ways in which people approach goal setting and self-improvement.

Personal development dominates these goals, with personal growth and health being almost equal priorities. Career development ranks third, while relationship-oriented goals affect about a third of goal setters. Younger generations prioritize career and financial advancement much more heavily (Gen Z: 47.3%, Millennials: 46.4% vs. Boomers: 9.4%). Personal growth remains high across all age groups, but peaks among Generation Z (61.8%).

India leads the way in personal growth motivation (62.3%), while Brazil tops health and fitness goals (54.4%). China shows the highest career/financial focus (44.6%), and the UAE leads in relationships/social motivations (42.6%).

Nearly eight in ten people (79.3%) indicate that they are confident in achieving the goals they set. Confidence declines significantly with age; Gen Z reports 91.2% trust, compared to just 51.2% among Boomers.

The most successful approach is starting small, an approach taken by only 37% of respondents, indicating that travelers are beginning to understand the value of gradual habit formation. This reflects Novotel’s 1% more philosophy, which will continue to inspire the Novotel 37 Collective so that more travelers understand the value of small steps for lasting impact.
