Ilya Sutskever will lead Safe Superintelligence following his CEO’s exit

Co-founder of OpenAi Ilya Sutskever says that he is joining the CEO role Safe super intelligenceThe AI startup he launched in 2024. In a post on X, Sutkever confirmed on Thursday that Daniel Gross, co-founder and CEO of the startup, left the company from June 29. Safe Superintelligence co-founder Daniel Levy becomes president of the startup, according to Sutkever.
The announcement follows weeks of reporting that Meta -CEO Mark Zuckerberg was in advanced conversations to rent Gross, as well as his old investment partner, former Github CEO Nat Friedman. At one point, Zuckerberg reportedly tried to acquire all the safe super intelligence, a startup that is most recently appreciated at $ 32 billion. Sutskever has also tackled those reports.
“You may have heard rumors about companies that want to acquire us. We are flattered by their attention, but are aimed at going through our work,” Sutkever said. “We have the calculation, we have the team and we know what to do. Together we will continue to build the safe super intelligence.”
Of course, the departure of Gross can raise questions about the startup. As a safe super intelligence close to his goal, a groundbreaking technology, as it is described-would the co-founder leave to start something new, apparently at Meta?
In particular, Safe Superintelligence describes itself as the world’s first straight Shot SSI Lab ‘, which means that the company has no other products or ambitions outside of developing, well, safe super intelligence. That is the name, that is the product, that is the whole thing. Sutskever started Safe Superintelligence shortly after leaving OpenAi, where he played a role in the short deposition of CEO Sam Altman.
In the meantime, it seems likely that Meta will develop Superintelligence Labs technology that drives many of the products of the company. In Zuckerberg’s Memo He announced the new unit and referred to Meta’s building and breeding products that reach billions of people, and quoted the early Wins -meta that meta had in AI Wearables.
That means that Gross, who previously led AI teams at Apple after the iPhone maker had acquired his startup, could play a more well -known role at Meta if he participates. Zuckerberg has also caught a number of top researchers from OpenAi and Google DeepMind to fill in his new AI team.
Nevertheless, Sutkever can have his hands full as CEO of Safe Superintelligence. Although he holds earlier high-ranking positions, such as the chief scientist of OpenAi, the CEO role can come up with new challenges-such as attracting new capital of investors and recruiting top talent. In his message, Sutskever notes that he will supervise the technical team of Safe Superintelligence.
