Outstanding Guest Acting (Drama, Comedy) Comment (updated 22 May 2025): The four Emmy Guest Acting categories often serve as a crystal ball – a touch of happiness for some series, or a subtle warning flare for others. This year all signs point to HBO Max that are trying to combine the market.
In guest drama and comic races, HBO Max has stacked his deck with heavy hits of “The White Lotus” (Scott Glenn), “The Last of Us” (Kaitlyn Dever, Catherine O’hara and Jeffrey Wright) and “Hacks” (Julianne Nicholson).
But don’t count Apple TV+. The hilarious satire in the workplace “The Studio” could eventually steal the entire guest comedy actor race. Emmy Lieveling Bryan Cranston leads the peloton, with scene-stealing support from none other than Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese. When you are “host stars” Oscar-nominated directors, is it less “who invited them?” And more “How can we get them back?” And let’s not forget the powerhouse like Sarah Polley and Zoë Kravitz, both worth the valuation.
And then there is “Saturday night live”. With season 50 in the books, the NBC Sketch Comedy is looking for more love than normal. Martin Short seems ready for a double nom, probably a member of the main ras of the comedy actor with “Only Murders in the Building” to help his hosting bid.
But he is not alone in the SNL shining. Timothée Chalamet, in the full Bob Dylan mode during his Oscar campaign for ‘A Complete Unknown’, is also in the mix for his hosting. Add multi -year contenders such as Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney and former Cast member Mike Myers and could read the ballot as a reunion special.
For prices Obsessives there is a nice footnote in sight.
In guest drama actor Beau Bridges can be more than just a solid gamble. He could also be the Emmy-Golden insurance for CO-star and lead drama actress Frontrunner Kathy Bates in “Matlock” must get her over the finish. Why is that? A small Emmy history.
If you tun up on the podcast of the Awards Circuit (FYC Golden Globes by the way), you have heard my hesitation to hold bates in the first place without extra series support – no drama series NOM, no extra acting. It’s a risk. But bridges can be the turning point. And if Emmy history is a guide, he has been here earlier.
In 2006, Kyra Sedgwick started a four-year series of lead drama actress nominations for ‘The Closer’, consistently nominated but always empty-handed, and the only recognition for the popular series. Then came 2010, and the guest of Bridges as Detective George Andrews where he grabbed a Nom and Sedgwick finally won her long-awaited Emmy. Chance? Maybe. Lucky Charm? Possible.
Can the lightning strike twice for Beau Bridges and Kathy Bates? Emmy voters love a good story arch. It also helps that he has three individual Emmy’s to prove his love and respect through the TV academy and industry.
(The list of predicted nominees and contenders is incomplete and will be updated every Thursday during the TV awards season.)
