Spain increases the income requirement for Digital Nomad -visa in 2025

The Spanish government has officially increased the minimum wage, which has influenced the financial requirements for the Digital Nomad visa (DNV) in 2025. Foreign Nationals who apply for or renew their DNV must now meet higher income burden.

On January 29, 2025, the Ministry of Labor of Spain reached an agreement with large trade unions to increase the minimum wage of the country (Salario Mínimo Interprofessional, SMI) by 4.4%. This adjustment increases the SMI by € 50 per month, so that it brings € 1,184 at 14 annual payments, which amounts to a total of € 16,576 gross per year.

Revised financial requirements for the digital nomad visa

The financial requirements of the DNV are directly bound to the SMI of Spain. Since the SMI is usually quoted as 14 payments per year, many foreigners first have to convert it into a size with 12 payment for clarity. Under this conversion:

  • New SMI: € 1,184 on 14 payments = € 16,576 per year
  • Equivalent monthly income on 12 payments: € 1,381.33 per month
  • Minimum required income for DNV (200% of the SMI): € 2,762 per month

With current exchange rates this corresponds to approximately £ 2,310 per month or $ 2,871 per month.

Impact on DNV applicants with people

For applicants who are looking for a DNV for themselves and their family members, extra income is required:

  • For a partner: Another 75% of SMI (€ 1,035.99), which means that the total required income for a few to € 3,798 per month.
  • For every extra dependent (for example children): An extra 25% of SMI (€ 345.33 per child).

For example:

  • Applicant + partner + one child: € 4,144 per month
  • Applicant + partner + two children: € 4,489 per month

Gross income required

It is important to note that these figures represent the gross income (known as gross In Spanish), before taxes and deductions.

Implementation time

The Spanish Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, has stated that this wage increase will be formally approved by the Spanish cabinet in the near future. Once determined, the Unidad is the Grandes Empresas Y Colectivos Estratégicos (UGE), the agency responsible for processing digital nomadvisa, expects that he will adjust the financial requirements accordingly.

Potential applicants are advised to ensure that they meet the updated income burden to be eligible for the digital nomadvisa of Spain in 2025.
