It lost points because its ecommerce and loyalty tools are less advanced than platforms like BottlePOS and Square for Retail, making it less ideal for liquor stores prioritizing omnichannel sales and customer marketing.

Why I like Scotch

Scotch earned its spot as the best liquor store POS for automated inventory receiving because it modernizes one of the most time-consuming parts of liquor retail operations: distributor invoice processing and inventory reconciliation.

During a live product demo, Scotch showed how the platform scans distributor invoices, automatically matches products using UPCs and distributor IDs, flags discrepancies, and identifies margin issues before inventory is finalized. Compared to older liquor POS systems that still rely heavily on manual inventory entry, the workflow felt significantly more automated and operationally efficient.

The system also handles large liquor catalogs particularly well. Bulk editing tools, customizable reports, distributor reassignment, and automated shelf-label workflows make it easier to manage thousands of SKUs across wine, spirits, and beer inventory. I was also impressed by the reporting tools, which proactively surface dead stock, negative inventory, and margin problems instead of forcing retailers to wait for physical inventory counts to uncover issues.

Scotch performed especially well for liquor-specific inventory workflows, reporting, and operational automation. Its biggest drawbacks are the required proprietary hardware, mandatory in-house payment processing, and long-term contract structure, which may be less appealing for smaller independent retailers.
