The future of long-haul travel: Air New Zealand’s Economy Skynest™ on sale from May 2026 | News

A new era of long-haul travel is on the horizon as Air New Zealand’s first innovation, the Economy Skynest™, will be available to book from May 18, 2026. He will fly aboard the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from November.
The groundbreaking concept gives travelers more choice and the opportunity to rest flat in the air, regardless of the cabin they fly in. The first flights will operate between New York (JFK) and Auckland (AKL), redefining comfort on one of the world’s longest routes.
A new standard for economy comfort
Nikhil Ravishankar, CEO of Air New Zealand, says Skynest is another example of the innovation that airlines are supporting and improving the travel experience.
“New Zealand’s unique location means we understand long-haul travel better than anyone. On some of the world’s longest commercial flights to and from New Zealand, Skynest is designed to make a real difference to the journey. With six lie-flat pods in a bunk bed layout between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins, it gives customers the opportunity to stretch out, lie flat and get a good few hours of rest in the air.”
Developed and tested over several years with more than 200 customers, each Skynest pod provides a quiet, private space with a full-length mattress, bedding, mood lighting, ventilation and charging ports.
For the first time, Economy and Premium Economy customers have the option to book special time to lie completely flat and recharge mid-flight, so they arrive in New Zealand refreshed and ready for adventure. The sessions are designed to allow natural sleep cycles, allowing time to gradually wind down, sleep and wake up. Initially, two sessions will be offered per flight.
Air New Zealand is recognized worldwide for innovation and experimentation and Skynest is the latest expression of the airline’s leadership in this area.
“It’s another example of how we continue to evolve and improve the Economy cabin experience,” said Ravishankar. “Skycouch gave customers more choice in the way they travel, and Skynest is building on that by offering a new rest option on our longest flights.
Skynest features six thoughtfully designed pods, providing a soothing, private space to rest and reset, complete with:
Lounger: A soft mattress with fresh pillow, sheets and blanket for each session, and a safety belt.
Personal comfort controls: individual USB outputs, reading lamp, cooling ventilation and a privacy curtain.
A sleep-first environment: soft mood lighting and a complimentary “Nestcessities” amenity pack including an eye mask, socks, earplugs, Aotea therapeutic skin care and a dental kit.
“It’s a simple idea with a powerful impact: Swap the headrest for a bedrest and arrive ready to go,” says Ravishankar.
