‘Shrinking’ creator Bill Lawrence says season 4 has “a new story.”

As Season 3 of “Shrinking” approaches its finale, co-creator Bill Lawrence is already setting expectations for what comes next. The showrunner revealed that the upcoming fourth season will mark a creative reset, introducing a new story while keeping the cast intact.

Lawrence explained that the series was originally designed around a three-season arc, focusing on grief, forgiveness and progress. Now that story reaches its planned conclusion, the creative team is preparing for a twist. He described the upcoming season as “risky” and exciting, emphasizing that the shift will allow the series to explore a new direction for its characters rather than continuing existing emotional storylines.

He developed that idea further in a continued answer to a fan, explaining, “We always pitched a three-season story about #Shrinking grief-forgiveness-forward. We wanted to stay true to that and end the way we planned. (So excited to do season 4 and a new story with the same cast.)”

The comedy-drama, streaming on Apple TV+, stars Jason Segel as therapist Jimmy Laird, a grieving widower dealing with personal loss while trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. Harrison Ford co-stars as his mentor, Dr. Paul Rhodes. The ensemble also includes Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley.

Segel, Ford, Williams and Urie all received Emmy nominations for their work on the series, with Segel and Ford also earning Golden Globe nods. “Shrinking” was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 2025 Emmy Awards. Apple TV+ renewed the series for a fourth season earlier this year, ahead of the Season 3 premiere in January.
