‘Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ renewed for season 2 on Hulu
Families are forever, MomTok lives on — and “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” has officially been renewed for 20 new episodes on Hulu, meaning a second and possibly third season of the show. The next installment will premiere this spring, according to Hulu, and production will begin next week. The renewal of ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ was a no-brainer: As Variety previously reported, the September 6 release of the series’ full season immediately became Hulu’s most-watched unscripted premiere this year, beating out other original Hulu content like “The Kardashians” and ABC’s reality offerings like “The Bachelor.” In Nielsen numbers for the week of its premiere, “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” was No. 7 on the streaming originals chart, based on just three days of data. Also? Season 1 ended on a literal cliffhanger, so fans need to know what comes next.
The series follows a group of Utah women — active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who also rose to prominence for producing viral content TikTok — in the wake of Taylor Frankie Paul’s May 2022 confession that she and her now ex-husband had been “gently swinging” with other LDS couples in their circle of friends. While none of the other swingers agreed to take part in the show, it appears Paul was flanked by MomTok castmates Mayci Neely, Demi Engemann, Jen Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Wessel, Mikala Mathews – and Whitney Leavitt, who announced early in the season that she didn’t really consider herself a friend of Paul’s, and later dramatically left the group chat. (In Variety reporter Anna Tingley’s recent interview with Neely and Paul, Neely said that Leavitt is no longer close to the cast, and “I don’t think anyone would want her back on MomTok.”)
In that sense, today’s renewal announcement did not include any details about who will be in the cast of the second season. When production on the new season of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” begins soon in Utah, we will hopefully be kept up to date on what’s going on with Paul, who has proven to be an absolute lightning rod . At the end of the pilot episode – which was filmed in the winter of 2023 – Paul was arrested for assault following a domestic violence incident with her on-again boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen (illustrated by bodycam footage and audio of police responding to the call). However, when the cameras officially started filming the series, Paul was pregnant and Mortensen was the father. Throughout the first season, viewers watched Paul struggle with Mortensen, who, if you squint, looks like a human red flag – and the aforementioned cliffhanger revolved around whether he had cheated on her (again). Paul gave birth in March, and she and Mortensen were still together last month during the first press tour for the show. In her recent TikToks, however Paul seems to indicate this that she broke up with him.
In the announcement, Walt Disney Television’s Rob Mills, executive vice president, unscripted and alternative entertainment, added his enthusiastic support: “A philosophical question was asked in Season 1: ‘Can #MomTok survive this?’ The answer is unequivocally yes! Spring 2025, get your dirty soda ready!”
