Results through efficiency: Wizz Air achieves leading performance | News

Wizz Air has been mentioned Most sustainable company in the European low-cost aviation industry during the World Finance Sustainability Awards 2026.

The award recognized Wizz Air for achieving the lowest CO2 emissions intensity[1] among European airlines. During the assessment period, Wizz Air achieved CO₂ emissions of 50.8 grams per revenue passenger kilometer (RPK). This performance was supported by the young fleet, high aircraft usage and high seating density. The airline operates 269 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family with an average fleet age of 4.5 years, making it one of the youngest fleets among major European airlines. Today, 75% of the fleet consists of new-generation neo aircraft, while the Airbus A321neo is configured with 239 seats, the highest seat density in the single-aisle market.

Wizz Air was also recognized for its broader ESG strategy, including continued investments in fleet modernization, operational efficiencies and preparations for the increased use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF[2]). The company’s approach prioritizes reducing emissions intensity through operational and technological improvements, complemented by long-term initiatives to support aviation decarbonization.

“This recognition reflects the efficiency embedded in our business model,” says Dorottya Durucsko, Head of Sustainability and Government Affairs at Wizz Air. “Our emissions intensity is determined by a young, modern fleet, a high occupancy rate, a strong occupancy rate and disciplined business operations. These foundations make our operations more efficient per passenger. For us, sustainability is not a slogan, but the result of consistently applying this model every day.”
