OpenAI rolls out a ‘lightweight’ version of its ChatGPT deep research tool

OpenAi brings a new “lightweight” version of his Chatgpt Deep Research Tool, which searches the internet to put together research reports on a subject, to Chatgpt Plus, Team and Pro users, the company announced on Thursday.
The new lightweight deep research, which will also come to free chatgpt users from today, is powered by a version of the O4-mini model from OpenAi, says OpenAi. It is not as capable as the “full” deep examination, but OpenAi claims that it is cheaper to serve and enables the company to increase usage limits.
“Responses will usually be shorter while retaining the depth and quality that you want to expect,” Openai said in a series of messages on X. “Once limits for the original version of Deep Research have been reached, Queries are automatically set to the lightweight version as standard.”
The lightweight version of Deep Research is powered by a version of OpenAI O4-Mini and is almost as intelligent as the deep research people who already know and keep, while they are considerably cheaper to serve.
