OpenAI lawyers question Meta’s role in Elon Musk’s $97B takeover bid

OpenAi asks Meta to produce evidence with regard to coordinated plans with Elon Musk and Xai to acquire or invest the chatgpt maker.
The request was made public in a short Submitted on Thursday in the current lawsuit of Elon Musk against OpenAi. Lawyers representing OpenAi said they subdivided the Meta in June for documents regarding potential involvement in Musk’s unsolicited, $ 97 billion bid to take over the startup in February. It is unclear of the submission or such documents. OpenAi eventually denied the bid of Musk.
The Lawyers of OpenAI say they discovered that Musk communicated with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about Xai’s bid to buy the chatgpt maker, including “about potential financing schemes or investments.”
Meta objected to the first summons of OpenAi in July; The lawyers of the chatgpt maker are now looking for a judicial order to obtain such evidence. OpenAI also asks the court for one of the documents and communication of Meta with regard to “any actual or potential restructuring or recapitalization of OpenAI” – the core issue in the lawsuit of Musk against OpenAi.
Meta spokesman Andy Stone focused WAN on a part of the OpenAi application in which states that neither Meta nor Zuckerberg signed the letter of intent from Musk to acquire the chatgpt maker.
Meta refused to comment further. OpenAi and legal adviser for Musk did not immediately respond to WAN’s request for comment.
In the background of OpenAi’s fight with Musk, Meta has invested considerably in his own efforts to develop Frontier AI models. In 2023, META leaders were obsessed with the development of an AI model that could defeat the GPT-4 of OpenAi, revealed court applications in another case. At the beginning of 2025, the AI models of Meta fell behind the industry stand, reportedly fondly Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg has increased the pressure in recent months, with several of OpenAi’s leading AI researchers, including a co-maker of Chatgpt, Shengjia Zhao, who now leads research efforts in the latest AI unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs. Meta also invested $ 14 billion in scale AI and reportedly approached various other AI Laboratories on acquisition -deals.
Although it is unclear how far conversations developed between Musk and Zuckerberg, the mere idea of a partnership between the two billionaires represents how much a threat is open. Two years ago Musk said that he would physically fight Zuckerberg in a cage match (it never happened).
The rise of AI may have encouraged Musk and Zuckerberg to set aside their differences.
The briefing announced on Thursday is part of a larger lawsuit that is brought by Musk against OpenAi that has the conversion of OpenAi of his arm with profit -making in a company for public utility. Such a conversion is needed for OpenAI to obtain financing from investors and eventually becoming public. Musk – a co -founder and early investor in OpenAi – has tried, however, to throw a key in the aim and claims that the restructuring is contrary to the founding mission of the startup.
Lawyers who represented Meta asked the court to reject OpenAi’s request to reject evidence, with the argument that Musk and Xai can provide relevant information. Meta also states that the internal discussions about the restructuring and re -capitalization of OpenAI are not relevant to the case.
This story has been updated to add more information about the matter, as well as the history of the relationship between Musk and Zuckerberg.
