In the fourth episode of the horror franchise, Patrick Wilson And Vera Farmiga Return as real-life paranormal researchers Ed And Lorraine Warren. This time the duo tackles the infamous spooky sequing that influenced the Smurl family in the 1980s.

Wilson shared in an interview with May 2025 with Entertainment weekly That the story of the Smurl family is in the radar of the magic team for a while.

“We have known about this for a long time,” the actor told the Outlet. “Then writers play with how it influences the family and what is going on in the family’s life. We can really theatricize it there. We don’t make a documentary.”

The Conjuring: Last Rites is based on a real ghostly ghost that the Smurl family has endured. The Warrens investigated the case in 1986, per Penn Live.

The Smurl family consists of parents Jack and Janet Smurl and their four children.

What happened to the Smurl family?

In 1973 Jack, Janet and the two children they had at the time moved to a duplex at home in Chase Street in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. While in the house, the family experienced several strange events, including loud sounds and bad scents.

As it got worse, the family claimed that the house had a demon, because the entity reportedly threw their family dog into a wall, shook their mattress, one of their daughters pushed a staircase and attacked relatives.

After spending years with the ghosts, the warrens of the story of the Smurl family heard and started investigating their house in 1986. Ed and Lorraine claimed to have met several attendees and have recorded evidence of paranormal activities, including beating, rapping and a message written on a mirror that told them to leave. Lorraine claimed that the Smurl’s four spirits were in the residence: an older woman, a young girl, a man who died in the house and a demon.

The Warrens did not eventually hit the demon in the house, so the Smurls called on a local predecessor to perform an exorcism, making things normal.

What happened to the Smurl family’s house?

Although they were lost from the demon, the Smurls claimed that they were still beating and sawing shadows. They eventually moved. A woman named Debra Owens moved to the alleged haunted house and shared with reporters that she never experienced anything extraordinary there.

Has the story of the Smurl family inspired other works?

In addition to inspiring the latest call film, the story of The Smurls was the subject of a paperback from 1986 entitled The spooky. A made-for-TV film with the same name was released in 1991.
