Michael Che quit Kevin Hart Roast, now Shades White Writers

Michael Che roasts the ‘Roast of Kevin Hart’.

The comedian and “Saturday Night Live” star was originally scheduled to perform at the live Netflix event on Sunday, two sources involved with the production said Varietybut he ultimately withdrew due to scheduling issues with “SNL.” (Che wasn’t alone: Sources say the lineup was shuffled quite a bit, with several last-minute additions and withdrawals.)

Now, Che has taken to social media to air some grievances about the event. writing on Instagram“White men and black people make different jokes. Black men say, ‘look at these n– shoes!’ White Roasts are like, “Slavery, math, murdered teens, sex crimes, slander, family secrets.” White men don’t care about their shoes.”

Che’s post appears to reference some of the edgier jokes made by Shane Gillis, Tony Hinchcliffe and others. Gillis made jokes that mocked Hart’s height and referenced slavery and lynching – the latter joke, he admitted, requiring “three weeks of deliberation.” And Hinchcliffe also indulged in his share of racist humor, with a particularly shocking joke about George Floyd causing a backlash online.

Other comics, such as Jeff Ross and Katt Williams, made fun of Hart when he attended a Diddy party. Pete Davidson and Hinchcliffe both had jokes that referenced (but didn’t say) the N-word. And Dwayne Johnson, Gillis, Ross and more joked about Hart’s late father’s addiction to crack cocaine. (“Nothing was off limits,” Ross said Variety in an interview the day after the live broadcast.)

Although Che didn’t mention any of the comedians on stage, he did troll some writers backstage at the roast.

“Let’s have a roast to celebrate the career of the most successful black comic character of the past decade,” Che wrote in a separate message. “I love that! Who should we get to write it?” On the next slide, Che posted a photo of five joke writers hired by Gillis – Nick Mullen, JP McDade, Mike Lawrence, Dan St. Germain and Zac Amico – all of whom are white.

“Come onnnnnnnnn… isn’t that funny?” Che added.

Netflix representatives had no comment. Che’s managers did not immediately respond Variety‘s requests for comment.

Those summoned by Che are not the only scribes who worked on the roast. It’s worth noting that the broadcast did 17 credited writerssome of which are black. Many of the comedians hired their own teams of joke writers, including Hinchcliffe and Chelsea Handler posted a photo with some of her writers and tagged them in the caption. Other writers were also hired to create punchlines for various talents, such as comedian Madison Sinclair, who slipped in some of her favorite unused jokes. Variety.

For example, McDade boldly acknowledged Che’s diss by resharing his post — but only the photo, not Che’s words. “Don’t swipe,” McDade wrote.
