“But that doesn’t mean we couldn’t make it work, or didn’t want to make it work,” she continued. “It just meant that we had to have a lot of patience with each other to figure out what the tradeoffs would be, and a general understanding that we’re likely to have different positions on almost everything — and figuring out a respectful way to have those discussions.”

Bell continued, “So when you find two people who say, ‘Yes, we’re going to make this work,’ and that means we’re going to have to make compromises all the time, and those compromises should work out well for both of us. And sometimes it’s going to ebb and sometimes it’s going to flow, but we’re not going to have checks and balances because we’re going to realize that it’s not me against you, it’s us against the world.”
Bell and Shepard, who share daughters Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary this month.
“Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me, ‘I would never kill you,’” Bell wrote via Instagram in tribute to Shepard. “‘Many men have killed their wives at some point. Even though I have strong incentives to kill you, I would never do that.'”
