James Van Der Beek auctions off ‘Dawson’s Creek’ items for cancer costs

James Van Der Beek is looking for additional funding to cover the costs of his cancer treatment. The 48-year-old ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star has chosen to partner with Propstore to sell memorabilia acquired during his career.
The catalog features clothing, props and set pieces, with entries such as the prom necklace that Van Der Beek’s Dawson gave Joey (Katie Holmes) as a gift for the prom in “Dawson’s Creek” and the cleats and West Canaan Coyotes Hat that Van Der Beek wore in the 1999 feature film “Varsity Blues.”
“I’ve been keeping these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all the recent twists and turns that life has presented lately, it’s clear that the time is now,” Van Der Beek shared. People. “While I feel a bit of nostalgia as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through the Propstore auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”
The items will be available for purchase through Propstore’s annual Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, which runs from December 5 to December 7. All proceeds go to Van Der Beek’s medical costs.
Van Der Beek was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer last year. Colorectal cancer, which starts in the colon or rectum, is the third most common cancer in both men and women in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. In the US, approximately 1 in 23 men and 1 in 25 women will be diagnosed with this form of cancer during their lifetime.
“I have been dealing with this diagnosis privately and taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” Van Der Beek told People when he revealed his diagnosis to the public. “There is reason for optimism, and I feel good.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control, colorectal cancer has the second highest treatment costs of any cancer. In 2020, more than $24.3 billion was spent on treatments in the US, accounting for 11.3% of the country’s cancer treatment costs.
