‘Happy Gilmore 2’ breaks Nielsen -record with 2.9 billion minutes

“Happy Gilmore 2” continues to break streaming records.

According to Nielsen-streaming data, the slow comedy follow-up was the number one most streamed film for the week of July 21, July with 2.9 billion viewing minutes, where the film was launched on Netflix on July 25.

With that viewing, it has established the record for the biggest look of a few weeks for a film in the history of Nielsen’s streaming top 10. The previous record was “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, which dropped 2.2 billion minutes when it debuted in December 2023.

It also marked the best open streaming week for an Adam Sandler film so far. The Sandler films have viewed more than 61 billion minutes per Nielsen on Netflix. He played in almost a dozen original films for Netflix, including “Murder Mystery”, “Hubie Halloween” and “The Week of”.

Netflix previously reported that “Happy Gilmore 2” attracted 46.7 million views over the first three days on the platform, defined with views defined as total hours that were divided by the total duration. That was the largest American opening weekend of all time for a Netflix film, as well as the best ever for one of Sandler’s films. The film has been on the Netflix Top 10 graphics for the past four weeks and counts.

“Happy Gilmore 2” arrived almost 30 years after the 1996 film, which generated $ 40 million at the cash register and helped to cement Sandler as one of the greatest comic stars of his generation.

Together with Sandler, the film saw the return of original stars Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald, while new cast members Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce and Sandler’s real wife and children were Jackie, Sunny and Sadie.
