Following Shah’s allegations, the Bureau of Prisons released a statement claiming it was “committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, impartiality and professionalism in the operation of its facilities.”

“Allegations of misconduct, including any suggestion of preferential treatment, are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated through established internal processes, including the Bureau of Internal Affairs and, where appropriate, the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Justice,” the statement said.

Instead, they said it requires staff members of prison facilities to “treat all inmates fairly, in accordance with law, policy, and institutional safety and security protocols,” noting that any “deviation” from that would “undermine” due process, as well as public confidence in the prison system.
