Full extent of Simon Cowell’s pain after Liam Payne’s death exposed

Simon Cowell suffered a devastating emotional breakdown following the drug-induced death of Liam Payne, which left him ‘disappearing’ for a week as he could not cope with the loss of the former One Direction star he helped turn into a global phenomenon.

Cowell, 66, launched Payne’s career after noticing him The X factor in 2010 and later signed One Direction to his Syco label following the group’s formation on the ITV talent show.

The troubled Payne died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, following a drug binge, sending shockwaves through the music industry and causing an outpouring of grief from fans around the world.

The singer rose to fame alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan in 1D, with the band becoming one of the most commercially successful pop acts of the century with hits such as What makes you beautiful And Best song ever.

A source close to Cowell told us that the music mogul was haunted by Payne’s death because he always felt deeply responsible for the young stars he helped create.

The insider said: “Simon took Liam’s death incredibly personally. He has worked with so many young artists over the years, but One Direction was different because he saw them grow from teenagers to global stars.”

Another source claimed that Payne’s struggles made Cowell question the pressure placed on artists who rose to fame at such a young age.

They added: “There is a feeling among those around Simon that Liam’s death exposed the dark side of the machine that creates these huge pop stars. Simon has struggled emotionally with that ever since.”

In a podcast, Cowell has now also described the depth of his grief after hearing of Payne’s death.

He said: “What do you do in a situation like that? It was so bad, I was in pieces. There were so many things going on in my head.

“I literally disappeared somewhere for a week to think about everything because I knew I was really, really struggling.”

Cowell explained that he was filming his Netflix series The next act at the moment Payne died – a show that documented his search for another world-conquering boy band – forcing him to face the responsibilities that come with mentoring young artists entering a cutthroat industry.

Reflecting on his role in mentoring new talent, Cowell added, “My responsibility is to say, ‘Look, if it works and you’re successful, that’s a good thing. But as your life changes, there are going to be times when it’s really stressful and really hard. I’ll help you prepare for that and be there when you need me.'”

Cowell also visited One Direction’s surprisingly rushed creation during the 2010 series The X Factor, The reveal of the group came together in less than half an hour after each member failed to progress individually in the competition.

He said: “They all had good auditions. In the middle rounds, for whatever reason, certain people made a mistake. They didn’t do enough to make it as solo artists.

“However, when I saw the boys all on stage, I thought for a moment: ‘We have to do something with them.’ Honestly, it took about 25 minutes to put them all together. It literally happened so fast.

“Then I just let them do whatever they wanted. A few weeks later I saw them walking around a corner together, and they looked great.”

Sources also tell us that Payne’s death has “forever changed” Cowell’s view of fame and the intense demands placed on young artists who must navigate their sudden superstardom under constant public scrutiny.
