When the camp opened in 2006, it was a bold vision: a luxury experience that embraced the romance of exploration while respecting the environment. At a time when ‘glamping’ was unheard of in the region, this 15-tent retreat redefined adventure travel – not as escapism, but as a connection to the land. The vision was clear: canvas tents infused with character, storytelling and sophistication, backed by Four Seasons’ signature service. “From the beginning, the camp invited guests not just to stay, but to travel on tailor-made itineraries – into nature, culture and a slower, more meaningful ‘off the grid’ rhythm of life,” adds Sean.

Many team members have been part of the journey since opening day and carry with them a sense of pride and belonging. “They are the true soul of the tent camp,” says Paweena Waraha, camp manager. “From day one, our team has been committed not only to hospitality, but to creating an experience that celebrates this extraordinary place. Everyone here, from our gardeners to our guides, plays a role in shaping this authentic experience.”

Famed architect and designer Bill Bensley’s timeless philosophy has endured because it was based on nature, local culture and adventure. “Many original elements still characterize the camp today: handcrafted materials, layered textures, curated antiques and thoughtful details that reward curiosity,” Paweena adds. While design refinements respect the original vision, they deepen the camp’s sense of place through local craftsmanship and natural materials.

Sustainable community relationships

Over twenty years, the camp’s guest experience has evolved in line with the changing sensibilities of travelers. What started as a ‘luxury adventure’ has shifted to cultural discovery, wellbeing and storytelling – without losing the intimacy and charm that define the tent camping experience.

Relationships with local communities underline the sense of community. Artisans, farmers and local specialists are woven into every aspect of the guest experience: from hand-woven textiles and signature bags made in Wang Lao villages to organic vegetables and coffee beans sourced from local farmers. “These connections have created a meaningful economic impact, providing artisans, farmers and small businesses with a stable income while safeguarding traditional skills for future generations,” says Paweena.

Guests are invited to participate directly through activities such as weaving, bamboo crafting and traditional fishing, forging real connections with the land and its people. Northern Thai traditions are celebrated through monk blessings, cooking experiences and seasonal festivals such as Loy Krathong, ensuring that cultural heritage is not only preserved but shared with pride.

Guardians of the Golden Triangle: Conservation with a purpose

The camp’s relationship with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) is central to its identity. Together, the camp and GTAEF have created opportunities for learning and compassion, improving wellbeing standards and supporting families. This commitment has earned worldwide recognition, including a Global Spirit Award for excellence in elephant welfare.

Sustainability is embedded in the camp’s daily activities. The use of single-use plastics has been reduced and water is carefully managed and reused for irrigation. Waste is minimized through composting and recycling, and materials are responsibly sourced with an emphasis on local, natural and reusable products. “Guests are encouraged to actively participate in sustainability efforts such as tree planting and community-led workshops,” notes Paweena.

Marking 20 years with meaning

To commemorate this special occasion, the camp has launched a 20th anniversary experience package, featuring exclusive activities and personal touches. The camp also presents a new signature experience, Breakfast in the Jungle, which invites guests to drive to a secluded setting in the heart of the peninsula, where a private chef will prepare a tailor-made breakfast. The experience concludes with a serene return by boat, accompanied by fresh air and breathtaking natural surroundings.

Paweena shares: “We will also introduce a series of initiatives in 2026 that celebrate both nature and community,” including a tree planting ceremony on January 15, 2026 and the launch of twenty community projects to support local schools, artisans, farmers and conservation organizations.
