Flower Parade in Madeira is held over two Sundays | News

The Flower Parade, a highlight of the Flower Festival – an event promoted by the Madeira Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture – will be held on two Sundays from this year, on May 3 and 17. This decision, in line with the objective of improving the visitor experience set out in the UPGRADE program, aims to increase the prestige of the parade and its participants while providing better viewing conditions for the public.

The change responds to the growing size of the parade, which has become lengthy and involves a large number of groups and performers. Despite strong public attendance along the route, in some cases – especially among those watching from the stands or standing areas – this resulted in spectators leaving before the end of the parade. This situation undermined the dignity of the event and the work of the groups, who rehearsed for months, invested their own resources and showed a high level of dedication. This new organizational model attempts to address this challenge.

It should also be noted that the idea of holding the parade in two stages had already been considered by the Madeira Regional Directorate of Tourism about two years ago. After analyzing this possibility and consulting with various stakeholders involved in the event, it was decided to implement this new format this year. The change is expected to increase the value of the event and the participating groups, while strengthening the celebration of the Flower Festival throughout the month of May.

That is why two parades will now take place along the same route, with lots to determine which groups participate each day. The 2026 program includes a wide range of cultural, recreational and samba associations, reflecting the vibrant community spirit at the heart of the Madeira Flower Festival. However, groups may exchange their performance dates by mutual agreement, subject to the knowledge of the Regional Directorate of Tourism.

It is also worth highlighting that communications regarding participation in the event, as well as this organizational change, were already published in January this year, providing participating groups with more advance notice. This has allowed for better planning of rehearsals, timely procurement of necessary materials and better organization of travel arrangements for those involved in the parade.

It should also be noted that this year a new group was admitted to the parade and that by holding the parade over two dates it became possible to limit neither the number of participating groups nor the number of members per group.

In addition to the Flower Parade, the Flower Festival program will also include the Madeira Classic Car Flower Parade on May 10, the Madeira Classic Car Revival (May 22-24), the Flower Market (April 30 to May 24) and other associated entertainment initiatives, adding diversity and appeal to the overall programme.

The reformulation of the Flower Festival is part of the objective to strengthen the tourist entertainment offer within the framework of the UPGRADE program, which provides for the creation of new products and market niches, the attraction of new audiences, an increase in supply and deeper differentiation, taking advantage of the specificities of the regional offer. One of the planned measures is the creation of a main parade, spread over two weekends.

With the first edition in 2026, this approach strengthens the Flower Festival as an important tourism product and a central part of the region’s annual tourist entertainment calendar.
