Josh Gad had to explain recent ‘Star Wars’ films to Mel Brooks for ‘Spaceballs’ sequel
Jos Gad had to put on a show for a comedy legend… which turned out to be him running away Mel Brooks through the recent “Star Wars” sequels while pitching a “Spaceballs” sequel.
The actor told the story in a recent episode of the “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, hosted by Kelly Ripa …explaining that Mel is heavily involved in a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel.
Gad says that when they presented their original concept, Mel told them that he needed them to explain the more recent films to him… and asked Gad not to go into detail.
JG says he then launched into a 40-minute explanation… likening himself to a combat vet going into battle in front of one person – sweating heavily, nailing every line and beat and explaining every comedic set piece.
Gad says that when he was done, Mel told him that it “really sounds like you have your finger on the pulse!”… a compliment that Josh says is the best he’s ever received.
News of Gad producing, writing and starring in the ‘Spaceballs’ sequel broke earlier this year… and Gad confirmed in November that they had already completed a first draft of the script.
If you don’t know… the original ‘Spaceballs’ came out in 1987 and was a parody of the ‘Star Wars’ universe. It played a leading role Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Johannes Snoep, Rik Moranis and Brooks himself. .

It looks like the new sequel has Brooks’ blessing… and with Gad’s appearance, he’s already gotten a taste of what it could look like!
