Reboot ‘Friday Night Lights’ in development at Peacock

The reboot series “Friday Night Lights” has found itself in a very competitive situation at Peacock. Variety has confirmed.

The series is now in development at the streaming service NBCUniversal. In November it was reported that a new version of the series was in the works, but it was not yet lined up on a streaming service at the time.

The official logline for the new series reads: “After a devastating hurricane, a high school football team and their damaged interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship that becomes a beacon of light for their city.”

Showrunner and executive producer of the original series Jason Katims is also helming the new series, along with original director and executive producer Peter Berg and original executive producer Brian Grazer. Kristen Zolner will join as executive producer for Imagine Entertainment. Universal Television will serve as the studio.

The original series “Friday Night Lights” aired for five seasons from 2006 to 2011, first on NBC and then on AT&T’s The 101 Network. It is inspired by HG Bissinger’s 1990 novel of the same name, which was first adapted by Berg as a 2004 film starring Billy Bob Thornton.

The original series ‘Friday Night Lights’ followed a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas, coached by Kyle Chander’s Eric Taylor. The series starred Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, Minka Kelly, Zach Gilford, Jesse Plemons, Michael B. Jordan and Jurnee Smollett. The show received 14 Emmy nominations throughout its run, with Chandler winning Best Actor in a Drama in 2011 and Katims winning Best Writing for a Drama that same year.
