The Most Anticipated Scripted True Crime TV Shows Are Coming Soon
Of the murder of JonBenet Ramsey a convicted murderer Ed Geinthere are several scripted true crime shows coming our way soon.
Paramount+ recently announced a limited series that will explore the Ramsey family before and after the 1996 murder of JonBenet. The untitled JonBenét Ramsey series is specifically about parents John and Patsy coping with the loss of their child while an investigation questions their involvement in her death.
“At the heart of the series is the story of Patsy and John Ramsey,” said a September 2024 press release. “Exploring the unbreakable partnership of these two complex people – as husband and wife, as mother and father – who find themselves and their children had dedicated to building the story of a perfect, privileged life that was shattered one Christmas night in 1996.”
Meanwhile at Hulu, Grace Van Patten will star in an upcoming untitled film Amanda Knox project, which is executive produced by Knox himself. The eight-episode limited series is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongly convicted of murdering her roommate Meredith Kercherand her 16-year odyssey to truly free herself.”

‘Monster’ Season 3 (Netflix)
Nicknamed the ‘Butcher of Plainfield’, Ed Gein was convicted of one count of first-degree murder and admitted to a second murder in the 1950s. It is suspected that Gein was involved in several other crimes around his hometown in Plainfield, Wisconsin. Gein also admitted to digging up several graves and creating grotesque souvenirs from the bodies. Gein served as the inspiration behind films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre And Psycho.
Charlie Hunnam has taken on the role of Gein in the next episode of Ryan Murphy‘S Sample. Laurie Metcalf has also been cast as Gein’s mother Tom Hollander will play Alfred Hitchcock And Olivia Williams plays the role of Hitchcock’s wife, Alma Reville.
Untitled Amanda Knox series (Hulu)
Knox was charged in 2007 with murdering her roommate Kercher while they were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison after she and her then-boyfriend were convicted Raffaele Sollecito were both convicted of the crime despite a lack of evidence.
An appeals court later found the former couple not guilty in 2011, but they were found guilty again at a retrial three years later. The Italian Supreme Court acquitted Knox of Kercher’s murder in 2015 and she was acquitted.
Ivorian migrant Rudy Guede was sentenced to 30 years in 2008 for Kercher’s murder after his DNA was identified at the crime scene. His sentence was later reduced and he was released from prison in November 2021.
Margaret Qualley was originally slated to play Knox in Hulu’s scripted series, but she left the project and Patten replaced her. Grace’s sister, Anna Van Pattenjoined her on set in the role of Knox’s sister.
Untitled JonBenet Ramsey Series (Paramount+)
After JonBenét’s murder, Patsy and John were suspected of involvement, and a grand jury voted to indict the couple in 1999. However, the indictment was never signed by the Boulder district attorney due to a lack of evidence. The couple was exonerated in 2008 when DNA testing helped investigators determine that the DNA found on JonBenét’s body came from an unrelated man.
Patsy and John will be played by Melissa McCarthy And Clive Owenrespectively. The series also plays a leading role Emily Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, Owen Teague, Shea Whigham And Will Patton. Burke’s role has yet to be cast.
Untitled Murdaugh Murders Podcast Series (Hulu)
The Murdaughs were a prominent South Carolina family who made headlines after the deaths of five people over a six-year period. They are alleged to be involved in a variety of crimes, including murder and fraud, which is the subject of Hulu’s upcoming series.
Alex Murdaugh – a high-powered civil litigation lawyer – resigned in 2021 amid allegations of embezzling funds. He was charged with double murder in 2022 after his wife and son were murdered. He was found guilty of murder and has also pleaded guilty to 22 federal charges, including wire fraud and money laundering.
Patricia Arquette stars Maggie Murdaugh in the “stranger-than-fiction family drama, a compelling story based on countless hours of reporting by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular ‘Murdaugh Murders Podcast’ – as well as exclusive, insider knowledge from years of experience following the case.”
‘Natalia’ (Hulu)
Natalia Gracewho was diagnosed with a rare form of dwarfism is the subject of the upcoming Hulu series after her former adoptive parents were accused of neglecting a dependent multiple times in 2019. The charges stemmed from a five-year investigation in which the couple alleged that Natalia was an adult posing as a child and has maintained her innocence.
Ellen Pompeo will star in and executive produce the limited series, which marks her first major role since landing Grey’s anatomy in 2005.
‘Firebug’ (Apple TV+)
The upcoming crime miniseries is inspired by the podcast of the same name. Taron Egerton, Jurnee Smollett, John Leguizamo, Rafe Spall And Greg Kinnear star in the show about the infamous California arsonist Johannes Leonard Orr.
Orr was a fire chief and arson investigator who was convicted of serial arson and four murders. He is believed to have set nearly 2,000 fires in a thirty-year arson spree, making him the most prolific serial arsonist in American history. He has maintained his innocence but reached a plea deal that led to him being released on parole in 2002.
‘The murder trial of my dentist’ (HBO)
Inspired by one New Yorker article, The murder trial of my dentist tells the true story of Dr. Gilberto Nunez (played by Pedro Pascal), who was charged with the murder of his friend, Thomas Kolman (played by David Haven). Nunez was found not guilty of murder by a jury in 2016.
‘Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy’ (Peacock)
John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer and sex offender who raped, tortured and murdered dozens of young men and boys. He was sentenced to death after being convicted of 32 murders and died by lethal injection in 1994. Michael Chernus plays the infamous serial killer in Peacock’s scripted series, which also stars him Gabriel Luna, James Badge Dale, Michael Angarano And Chris Sullivan.
