GQ Men of the Year (PHOTOS)

GQ Men of the Year tribute John Mulaney jokes that even as a child he knew he would one day be recognized as such by the magazine.

“Little boy John was one of the most grandiose, delusional people you ever met,” he told Variety at the Men of the Year party at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles on Thursday. “That was probably number 10 on the list. But it’s a really nice surprise and it was a really cool experience. I’m tempted to be jaded about it, but it was all beautiful.”

He said wife Olivia Munn and her mother were “thrilled” when Mulaney told them the news. “Although I think [Olivia’s mom] Maybe I misunderstood and thought I was the sexiest man alive,” he said.

This year’s Men of the Year selection also includes Dwayne Johnson, Pharrell Williams and Shaboozy.

The party had a western theme. Editor-in-chief Will Welch explains why he decided to go abroad this time. “It starts with the dominance of the country,” he told Variety. “I grew up listening to country music – Dwight Yoakam, Garth Brooks, stuff like that – but we’ve also seen country take over, the charts, all this hip-hop fusion of country, people like Post Malone going country, Beyoncé went to the country with “Cowboy Carter” and of course another big moment was Pharrell doing a big cowboy collection for Louis Vuitton. It seems like a moment.

“Then we talked about this being the 29e Men of the Year and you have to keep reinventing yourself and reinventing things, so we had this idea of the [party’s] livestream and we were thinking about American rodeo and creating a fair atmosphere,” Welch continued. “Once we had that idea, the rest was easy.”

Besides, Welch added, “when you hear ‘American rodeo,’ you think, ‘That’s where I want to go.’ Dressing up in a rodeo western style, anyone could do it. It’s incredible how many people are working on the theme tonight.”
