Liam Payne’s life in pictures before his tragic death at the age of 31

In the years leading up to his death, Payne caused concern due to several health issues.

In September 2023, he was hospitalized after suffering a serious kidney infection while on holiday in Italy. His mother, Karen, told the newspaper Daily mail she felt helpless when Payne spent a week in a hospital in Milan receiving treatment.

She said: “We’re all worried about it but we’ve just got to get on with it. It’s awful – he’s all over there.”

During his time with One Direction, Payne turned to “pills and booze” to cope with the pressure. He said, “Being an alcoholic and doing whatever was my choice. So no need to be whiny, but I know it was a sacrifice to be here.”

He revealed in a Video from July 2023 that he spent 100 days in a drug rehabilitation center in Louisiana. At the time, he told his fans that he had to “go away and get better.”

Payne explained: ‘I was in bad shape up to that point and I was more than anything very happy when I arrived to sort of put a stop to life and work.

“I didn’t have my phone for almost 100 days. I had no connection to the outside world at all, and it kind of prepared me for that moment, when I left. The hardest part was turning the phone back on.”
