Webtoon Productions, the French OuiDo! Adapt ‘Lumine’ as an animated series

The worldwide hit Webtoon webcomic ‘Lumine’ seems ready for a new life as an animated series. Webtoon Productions, the US-based studio and IP company of Webtoon Entertainment, has signed a pact with French animation studio OuiDo! Productions to develop an animated series version of the hit webcomic, which has been viewed more than 550 million times on the Webtoon platform.

Webtoon Entertainment turned heads last November thanks to a deal with Warner Bros Animation to co-produce adaptations of 10 favorite Webtoon webcomic series for worldwide distribution.

The deal with OuiDo! shows that it continues to expand its international slate of animated and anime-inspired adaptations beyond that WBA arrangement, focusing on some of the most popular franchises.

A good example is author Emma Krogell’s fantasy friendship story “Lumine,” which ran on Webtoon from 2017 to 2024, with a hiatus. The adaptation will be introduced this week during the Annecy Festival Mifa market in France, which takes place from June 23 to 26.

A logline released by Webtoon Productions and OuiDo! on Monday confirms that the adaptation will once again be set in a world where werehounds, witches and humans live side by side.

“Lumine is a hapless weather dog with nowhere to go… until he meets antisocial witch boy Kody. One causes trouble wherever he goes, and the other attracts trouble like a magnet,” the logline reads.

“Without realizing it, Lumine has become the first to join a family full of secrets of its own. Kody is plagued by shadows and his motivations for hiring Lumine are not nearly as simple as they seem. Things are much more dangerous than Lumine expected, and this is just the beginning,” the logline ends.

An important art image shared with Variety continues the character design from the first part of the webcomic and features Lumine and Kody plus a white-furred werewolf protecting two children from an attack by another werewolf. Surrounding the characters is a forest, a Gothic mansion and two skyscraper buildings rising on the horizon.

Screenwriter Bryan Q. Miller (“He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” “Smallville”) will serve as showrunner and co-write the adaptation, in collaboration with OuiDo! Productions CEO Sandrine Nguyen and her creative team at Paris-based OuiDo! Productions.

The adaptation’s executive producers are Webtoon Productions president David Madden and head of Global Animation Sydney Bright, alongside OuiDo!’s Nguyen and president Boris Hertzog.

“’Lumine’ is exactly the kind of project we like to champion at OuiDo!: a beloved world, memorable characters and a story with real emotional resonance,” said Sandrine Nguyen, CEO of OuiDo! Productions.

“We are so excited to partner with Webtoon Productions, whose deep knowledge of creator-led franchises and global fan communities is invaluable,” she added. “Having Bryan Q. Miller on board is another tremendous strength for the adaptation, who brings exceptional experience in creating compelling character journeys. Together, we look forward to bringing the extraordinary world of Emma Krogell to animation for a global audience.”

“Webtoon has transformed visual storytelling, and there is a tremendous opportunity for us to turn these incredible stories into new animated TV and film projects,” said David Madden, president of Webtoon Productions.

“Fans around the world have connected with Lumine for its incredibly lovable characters, emotional friendships and unique blend of fantasy, humor and mystery. At its core, it is a story about belonging and finding family, wrapped in a visually imaginative world, which makes it particularly exciting to bring to animation with OuiDo!, who brings expertise in developing animated entertainment from tentpole IP.”

The web comic “Lumine” has been translated from English into French, Spanish, German and Chinese (traditional and simplified). It has also been published in four graphic novel volumes by Penguin Random House and Webtoon Unscrolled.

The adaptation’s announcement follows the January greenlight of Webtoon Productions’ animated series adaptationLore Olympus” with Prime Video and The Jim Henson Company. Additional animation makeovers in the work of Webtoon webcomichits include “Apocalyptic Horseplay”, adapted by Dominic Russo, co-creator of “Workaholics”, and “Gosu” with Toei Animation and Studio Mir; “Eleceed” with DandeLion Animation Studio.

Founded in 2003 by Nguyen and Hertzog, Ouido! Productions produced “Magicampers” for Disney Jr., “Alvinnn!!! and The Chipmunks,” co-produced with Bagdasarian Productions, and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+” for Disney Jr.

After repurchasing OuiDo! of Technicolor Animation Productions in 2025, its founders Nguyen and Hertzog have transformed it into a full media group covering the entire value chain of production, distribution and licensing and launching a dedicated studio for animation for teens and adults with the “Lumine” adaptation featured on the banner in this campaign.
