Sabrina Carpenter responds to hate with her Short n’ Sweet Tour costumes
Sabrina Timmerman had the funniest response to criticism of her sexy costumes on the website Sweet and short tour.
“You’re still going to have the occasional mother who has strong opinions about how you should dress,” Carpenter explained TIMEin a profile published on Wednesday, October 2. “And to that I just say, ‘Don’t come to the show,’ and that’s OK.”
Carpenter continued, opening up about his onstage nervousness, “It’s a shame it was ever something to criticize because honestly the scariest thing in the world is getting up on stage in front of so many people and having to perform like it’s Nothing.” If the only thing that helps you with that is the way you feel comfortable dressing, then that’s what you need to do.”
The “Espresso” singer’s costumes include custom crystal corsets from Victoria’s Secret, black lace catsuits from Patou, glitter skirts, garters, halter tops, heels and more.
Carpenter runs onto the stage first with a towel wrapped around him. She then opened the piece to reveal a sparkly liner and a gorgeous corset top with a kiss mark on her chest, a nod to her album cover. The actress paired the look with fishnet tights embroidered with various lyrics, including “Taste me,” “I’m Working Late” and more.
“Femininity is something I’ve always embraced,” Carpenter said of her girlish outfits. “And if right now that means corsets and garter belts and fluffy robes or whatever, then that’s what that means.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Carpenter mentioned that this is the first tour where she has had duplicates of her costumes. “It used to be like this: if there are stains on that outfit, good luck.”
While traveling through Singapore, Australia and South America with Taylor Swift during her Eras tourCarpenter wore corsets with pastel cutouts from Frolov, pleated miniskirts, platform boots and more. “I would be sweating, and it would just be horrible,” she said of her past costumes.
