‘The Traitors’, ‘Rockford Files’ Reboot

NBC has unveiled its fall schedule for the 2026-2027 broadcast season, including the new broadcast edition of “The Traitors.”
As previously announced, the NBC version of the hit competition series will feature non-celebrity contestants and Emmy-winning host Alan Cumming as the Faithful attempt to oust the Traitors to claim the show’s $250,000 cash prize. It airs Thursdays at 8:00 PM ET/PT as a lead-in for “Law & Order: SVU,” followed by “Law & Order” at 10:00 PM.
“The Hunting Party” aired earlier on Thursdays following the “Law & Order” block last fall. That show is still awaiting word on its fate for a third season, making it the only NBC primetime scripted show without a formal renewal or cancellation.
“Law & Order” was recently renewed for a 26th season, but it was reportedly in the bubble this season with no guarantee of a return in the fall. However, Lisa Katz, president of scripted content at NBC & Peacock, said that was not in fact the case.
“I think it’s a bit of a misrepresentation that it was on the bubble,” she said. “I think we were looking at all the different slots and opportunities, figuring out what went where and how many episodes. So it was just more of a math thing, to be honest.”
The “One Chicago” block continues on Wednesday evenings. It starts with “Chicago Med” at 8 p.m., followed by “Chicago Fire” and finally “Chicago PD.”
NBC is also making room for its two new dramas and two new comedies. The new drama “Line of Fire,” starring Peter Krause and Hope Davis, about a family involved in law enforcement who becomes entangled in a deadly conspiracy, airs in September Mondays at 10 p.m. after a two-hour episode of “The Voice,” which features the return of coach Kelly Clarkson. In October and November, the show will still air at 10 p.m. after an hour-long episode of “The Voice,” with NBC returning to the comedy “St. Denis Medical’ broadcasts. Season 2 of “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins” shifts to the fall on Mondays at 8:30 p.m.
Fellow freshman series “Newlyweds,” a multi-camera comedy starring real-life couple Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, along with executive producer Jamie Lee Curtis, airs Fridays at 8:30 following new episodes of “Happy’s Place.”
The two other new shows — a reboot of “The Rockford Files” starring David Boreanaz and the comedy “Sunset PI” from the “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” team of Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici and starring Jake Johnson — will both bow midseason. “Rockford Files” is scheduled for January, while “Sunset PI” is scheduled for February.
Both “Rockford” and “Sunset PI” have had strong buzz since they were first announced as pilot pickups at NBC.
Regarding the decision to keep both shows mid-season, NBC’s chairman of program scheduling strategy said, “It’s largely due to the time periods they’re in. We’re putting ‘Traitors’ Thursday at 8 o’clock, and we also think this is a great period for ‘Rockford.’ And “Reggie Dinkins” was a midseason show that just wrapped its first series. We wanted to bring that back in the fall, and then we’ll introduce ‘Sunset PI’ later in the season after ‘Reggie Dinkins’ has had its run.”
“I also think that, as Jeff said, we think ‘Rockford’ is a great 8 p.m. show, and we didn’t have an 8 p.m. period in the fall,” Katz added. “So it’s an opportunity to put it where we think it will draw the biggest and best audiences.”
NBC has also announced a series pickup for a game show version of “Wordle,” hosted by “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie. That show was first reported to be in the works in October 2025, with Guthrie confirming that the series itself would be picked up on “Today.” Other unscripted series returning to NBC this summer include “America’s Got Talent,” “American Ninja Warrior” and “Password.” As previously announced, “Destination X” will return in 2027.
As previously announced, NBC will broadcast the 78th Emmy Awards on September 14 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
On the sports side, NFL coverage of “Sunday Night Football” is back, as are several NBA regular season games starting in October. Coverage for “Sunday Night Basketball” begins in mid-winter. In the spring, NBC will air the NBA playoffs and “Sunday Night Baseball.” The Peacock Network also continues to cover home football, such as the Big Ten Conference, the WNBA regular season and playoff games, and the wild card playoffs for the MLB postseason.
NBC is also preparing a three-hour special on December 10 in honor of the network’s 100th anniversary. Many details have yet to be announced, but the special will originate from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Other specials include “The Americas: A Wild 250th” to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The special is said to “showcase iconic American species whose deep connection to the land and the country’s history has left an indelible mark on the country. From the majestic bald eagle to fearless bison and clever sea lions, each animal reflects a brave American spirit worth honoring.”
NBC will also air “The Americas: Mother’s Day” in 2027. The description for this special reads: “The Wildest Mothers on Earth prove that love, resilience and a little ingenuity can conquer just about anything. Set against the country’s vast landscapes, the special reveals how animal motherhood is shaped by the environment they live in and the legacy of the land itself. Both heartfelt and enlightening, it offers a fresh take on familiar stories and reminds us that raising the next generation is the greatest adventure of all.”
Both “The Americas” specials are executive produced by Mike Gunton (“Life,” “Planet Earth II,” “Dynasties”) and Holly Spearing for BBC Studios Natural History Unit in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio.
