Kevin Bacon will star in the ‘Southern Bastards’ pilot on Hulu

The Onyx Collective pilot “Southern Bastards” at Hulu has cast Kevin Bacon in a lead role, Variety has learned.
Additionally, Reinaldo Marcus Green (“King Richard,” “The Punisher: One Last Kill”) has come on board to direct and produce the pilot, taking over directorial duties from Nia DaCosta.
“Southern Bastards” was picked up as a pilot at Hulu in October 2025. It is based on the graphic novels of the same name. The official logline states that the show “follows a tenacious military vet to Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father (Bacon). What she finds is a murderous hornet’s nest of organized crime, run by the winningest high school football coach in the South.”
Bacon will play the role of Earl: “Earl, the son of legendary Sheriff Bert – who ruled Craw County with an iron fist, is a tough but unassuming army veteran. Eager to mend fences and reconnect with his daughter – and not afraid to stir the hornet’s nest of Craw County.”
Bacon’s recent TV roles include ‘Sirens’ on Netflix and ‘The Bondsman’ on Amazon Prime Video. He previously played the title role in the Amazon comedy series “I Love Dick,” which aired for one season and earned Bacon a Golden Globe nomination. Bacon’s other television roles include the Showtime series “City on a Hill” and “The Following” on Fox. He is best known for his film roles, such as his iconic performance in the film ‘Footloose’, as well as ‘Hollow Man’, ‘Mystic River’, ‘Apollo 13’, ‘Tremors’, ‘A Few Good Men’ and many more.
Bacon is repped by MGMT, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole and Viewpoint. Green is repped by WME, Granderson des Rochers and ID.
Bill Dubuque and DaCosta share a co-story for “Southern Bastards,” with Dubuque writing and executive producing the teleplay. Matt Olmstead will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, who created the graphic novels, will executive produce. Layne Eskridge of POV Entertainment also serves as executive producer, along with Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media and Green. Simone Harris of Proximity and Kate Berry of POV co-executive produce. Proximity Media creative executives Hannah Baker and D’Angelo Louis will also oversee the project. The series is produced in conjunction with the fifth season.
