Google doubles down on ‘AI phones’ with its Pixel 10 series

With the launch of the new Pixel 10 series Almost Google Apple for Apple to deliver AI-driven smartphones to consumers. The devices, announced during the Made by Google event on Wednesday, come only a few weeks before Apple’s expected iPhone 17 avoidance, which promises to be more of the same -better cameras, possibly thinner devices and new colors to choose from.

In the meantime, Google has quickly integrated its AI platform in its devices.

Last year the Pixel 9 series added a number of AI functions, such as Gemini Live (Gemini’s Voice mode), aids for image generation, call notes, searchable screenshots and more. Since then, Google says that live conversations of Gemini have been 5x longer than on text-based conversations.

Combined, the updates can show Google what the newest AI technology can do when it is improved by the Tensor G5 Processor, an upgrade to the adapted silicon of the company, designed for AI experiences and the first to run its latest Gemini Nano model.

In addition to the launch, Google announced that Gemini Live will get a new audio model that you will detect tone – such as whether you are enthusiastic or delivered – and adjust the answer accordingly.

With the addition of a function called Visual Overlays, Gemini can see live what you see through the lens of your camera and giving guidance by marking things on your screen. While traveling in a foreign country you can, for example, keep your phone up to see if the street plates offer information about parking along the road.

Another new function, Magic Cue, makes the AI more proactive by offering contextual suggestions in real time, between apps such as Gmail, calendar, messages, screenshots and others.

The idea of a more proactive interaction between people and Google technology is something the company has dreamed of for years, long before the AI era. For example, in the early years 2010, Google introduced an Android function called Google Now that would appear cards with real-time information regarding your daily schedule or the time of the day, such as nearby restaurants during lunch, coming meetings or flight data.

Years later, Magic Cue is the AI-driven reintroduction of this function, but one where it inserts itself into your daily apps and interactions.

Google demonstrated how Magic Cue could suggest a restaurant to dine with a friend, and offers quick access to call the restaurant to make a reservation. It can introduce an answer to your friend with the reservation details or point to your agenda to check your availability.

The suggestions from Magic Cue appear in the app you use and are packed with a rainbow -colored circumference to distinguish them, as well as within Daily Hub, a personalized daily digest in your discover feed. You can also tap the suggestions to take action.

Also similar to Google Now, Magic Cue will be able to give memories of the surface. But it goes one step further by popping up memories and reports more intuitively. For example, it can remind you of groceries that you have to handle, such as a return of an online order, proposing topics that you may want to investigate or recommend new playlists to stream.

During the launch, the suggestions of Magic Cue will be limited to selected activities, such as setting up a tab, adding events to your agenda and showing the prediction for a coming trip in the weather -app. Over time, Google will add other options and you can configure to which data source the function has access.

Apple must be noted, tries to do something similar by enabling users to talk to Siri to communicate and take action within their apps, but unfortunately the AI-driven Siri has been postponed to 2026.

Another of the more interesting additions in the Pixel 10 series is camera coach, an AI-driven assistant who aims to make you a better photographer.

The function is launched in an example with the new devices and uses Gemini models to offer suggestions about how you can better frame and compile your recording. You can even choose a “Get Inspired” option that suggests scenes that you may not have considered.

Moreover, the camera can now recognize when you take a group photo. The “Auto Best Take” function activates and analyzes a maximum of 150 images that are included for a few seconds to find the best – whether it is a recording that you have broken yourself or have made a shot by mixing others together via AI.

You can then with the AI-driven tool “Ask Photos”, edit the recording to do other things, such as repairing the lighting, changing the framing or removing an object from the photo by talking to or texting the AI assistant of photos.

On pro-devices, the Pro Res ZOOM option will also use AI to enable you to ‘zoom in’ things like architecture and landscapes on 30x-60x or 30x-60x for wildlife and animals in the wild.

Related to the improved use of AI in photography, Pixel 10 phones will also be the first to implement C2PAA standard that determines the origin and operations of digital content will help identify when photos have been changed by AI.

Another new AI function, Voice Translate, will use AI on the device to translate your telephone conversation into what sounds like the own voice of each speaker. This can be a potential game changer, especially for business users and world travelers, if it works as described. (This must of course still be tested by reviewers.)

The function will translate into or into English and Spanish, German, Japanese, French, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian and Indonesian.

In the Pixel telephone app, a new addition called Take A-message offers real-time transcripts for missed and rejected calls and then uses AI to identify the next steps you must take based on the caller’s voicemail. (That update also comes to call notes.)

Pixel Journal is now Google’s answer to the Apple’s Journal app, but one that uses AI to ask you to share your thoughts, to follow your progress towards goals and to provide insights over time.

Other small AI -upgrades to the Pixel 10 -Line -Up include writing tools integrated in the GBOard keyboard, updates for Pixel Screenshots in Pixel Studio and Notebook LM integrations with recorder and screenshots.
