Report: OpenAI plans to shift compute needs from Microsoft to SoftBank

OpenAi predicts a major shift in the next five years around who achieves the majority of its computing power, The reported information On Friday.

By 2030, OpenAi expects to get three -quarters of its data center capacity from Stargate, a project that is expected to be heavily financed by Softbank, one of the latest financial donors from OpenAi. That means a major shift from Microsoft, the largest shareholder in OpenAi, which today meets the most electricity needs from the startup.

The change will not happen at night. OpenAi is still planning to increase the expenditure for Microsoft data centers in the coming years.

During that time the total costs of OpenAI will grow dramatically. The information reports that OpenAi burned $ 20 billion in cash in 2027, much more than the $ 5 billion that it reportedly burned out in 2024. By 2030, OpenAi reportedly predicts that the costs surrounding the running of AI models, also known as inference, will surpass what the startup spends on training AI models.
