Writers’ Room ends in six weeks
“Shogun” is getting closer to a new season. Hot off the heels of its dominance at the 2025 Golden Globes — winning the drama series award and three acting wins — the writers behind “Shogun” are busy figuring out where the series goes.
“Well, it continues,” says executive producer/creator Rachel Kondo. ‘We’re still trying. We have not given up. And I’m not sure what we can say. Kondo’s husband and co-executive producer/creator Justin Marks added, “We’re about six weeks away from the end of the writers’ room.”
Marks recently signed a new overall TV deal with FX Productions, in which he will develop new projects for FX, including the potential new seasons of “Shogun” with Kondo. The potential new seasons of the series are being developed in collaboration with Clavell’s estate.
On Sunday, “Shpgun” swept the drama categories; In addition to best drama series, the show won for star Hiroyuki Sanada as best TV drama actor, Anna Sawai for best TV drama actress and seTadanobu Asano for best TV supporting actress.
In September, the show set a record with 18 Emmy Award wins, marking the most wins for a series in a single season. That included wins for Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Best Actress in a Drama Series (Anna Sawai).
“Shogun” was originally considered a limited series, but due to its success and critical acclaim, FX started thinking about turning it into a regular series. In May, star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada signed a deal with FX to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the Japan-set historical epic. Then FX moved the show to the drama categories in the 2024 Emmy race.
Later in May, it was revealed that a writers’ room would begin last summer to develop two more seasons of the show. FX has not yet given the show a formal renewal.
