Strict firearms and ammunition laws

The government of the Turks and Caicos maintains strict laws for firearms and ammunition, which apply to all travelers, including those on the road. Even a single bullet in hand luggage or checked baggage can lead to arrest, heavy fines and considerable prison sentence. Authorities enforce these regulations rigorously, even at airport security control points when travelers leave.

Some American citizens have been detained for a long time – often a few weeks or longer – after they have been found in their possessions with ammunition. Perpetrators may be confronted with serious legal consequences, including prison sentences of 12 years or more. Although there are legal provisions that make discretion possible in conviction, the Ministry of State warns that it cannot guarantee a clement or release.
