US Embassy in Peru issues security warning due to state of emergency

The American embassy in Lima did that issued a security alert after the Peruvian government declared a 30-day state of emergency in the provinces of Metropolitan Lima and Callao. The measure, which takes effect immediately, is aimed at addressing what authorities have described as “increasing uncertainty” in the capital region.

Under the emergency decree, the Peruvian Armed Forces are authorized to support the National Police (PNP) in maintaining public order. The PNP has been given extensive powers, including the ability to restrict freedom of movement and public assembly during this period.

“Security forces may request identification documents, and Peruvian law requires all individuals to comply with such requests,” the advisory body said. “U.S. citizens throughout Peru are reminded to exercise caution and maintain situational awareness to reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime.”

The embassy urged US citizens to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings and follow instructions from local authorities. It also advised travelers to remain alert in tourist areas, avoid displaying valuables and refrain from resisting robberies.

“Items are replaceable, your life is not,” the message emphasizes.

For ongoing updates and safety guidance, U.S. citizens are encouraged to follow the embassy’s official alerts and messaging page at pe.usembassy.gov.
