US embassy in Cuba issues travel warning due to security reasons
The US Embassy in Havana has issued a new one safety warning warning U.S. citizens living in or traveling to Cuba of a significant increase in thefts and violent incidents related to the island’s ongoing economic crisis.
According to the embassy, the deteriorating economic conditions have contributed to a noticeable increase in crime throughout Havana and other parts of the country. Reported incidents include thefts involving knives and other sharp weapons, minor attacks on embassy vehiclesand even home invasions resulting in the loss of personal property. Officials noticed that too frequent power outages across Cuba create conditions that encourage criminals to act under the cover of darkness.
The embassy’s alert urges U.S. citizens to remain cautious and take additional steps to protect themselves, especially during nighttime hours or in areas affected by power outages. Residents are advised to secure their homes by locking all doors and windows after dark and removing any items from gardens or balconies that could tempt thieves, such as bicycles, hoses or tools.
Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to maintain a high level of personal awareness. The embassy recommends keeping cell phones fully charged and saving emergency contact numbers in advance. Valuables should be kept out of sight, and wallets or purses should be carried on the front rather than in back pockets or hanging loosely over the shoulder. Travelers are also warned to avoid showing cash in public, limit alcohol consumption and never accept drinks from strangers.
In the event of a confrontation or attempted theft, the embassy emphasizes that individuals should prioritize safety and avoid resistance. Identifying an escape route in advance and disengaging from potential violence can be critical. If a crime does occur, the embassy advises being a good witness by recording the suspect’s appearance, clothing and any vehicle or license plate details, rather than attempting to intervene directly.
