Unmukt Chand Cricket Doc ‘Unbroken’ wrapping with Netflix Vet Director

Director Raghav Khanna has completed the production on “Unbroken: The Umukt Chand Story”, a documentary function that follows the dramatic pivot of the former Indian cricket captain of the potential national team star to pursue his dreams in American Cricket.

The documentary describes the journey of Unmukt Chand of the World Cup winning captain under 19 in 2012 to his decision to leave his childhood dream to play for the National Team of India. Now that Los Angeles Knight Riders competes in the American Major League Cricket, Chand’s story represents a dramatic reinvestment that the film explores about continents.

The completed documentary, produced by Riverland Entertainment and Tudip Entertainment, is planned for release soon with the distribution platform that still has to be revealed. The project still marks a collaboration for seasoned producers Dipti Agrawal and Tushar Apskar, where Khanna also serves as a producer in addition to co-producer Priyanka Chaudhari.

“Looking back, life has been a roller coaster, from winning the World Cup under 19 to retiring from India at the age of only 28,” said Chand. “From a poster boy to being troll and then forgotten – I lived in the extremities of public opinion.”

For Chand, who led India to victory in the final of 2012 against Australia and Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) represented in the Indian Premier League Cricket Tournament, the filmmaking process turned out to be transformative.

“When Raghav told me about the documentary, I was hesitant at first, but the experience of filming the documentary with him was Cathartic and it made me look at my own story from a new perspective,” he thought. “I feel that it is a story that will resonate with many people who don’t get what they want, but are still determined to keep striving for their path.”

Who previously led the documentary production of Netflix APAC and the Academy Award-winning short ‘The Elephant whisperers’, co-commanding, recently directed ‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’ for Netflix and was the creative power behind the popular ‘Raja Rasoyian’.

The director approached the subject with what he calls ‘cinematic realism’, remain faithful to Chand’s truth and created room for universal connections. “What pulled me to the story of Umukt was the sharp contrast between his potential and the outcome – the inversion of being praised as the next big superstar of Indian Cricket to be avoided to be uncertainty,” said Khanna.

“His journey reflects on the competitive and ruthless nature of professional sports, and perhaps of life itself, where a single moment – often outside of our control – can undo years of hard work and aspiration. In the core this is a film about broken dreams, second opportunities and the grace that is needed to start again,” Khanna added.

The producing team emphasized the themes of the documentary outside of Cricket. “The story of Unmukt Chand is not just about cricket, it is about resilience, reinvention and pursuing identity outside the spotlight,” noted Agrawal and Appskar. “In a world obsessed with the highlights of fame, we often overlook the human journey behind the Fallouts and comebacks.”

Co-producer Chaudhari added: “Raghav brings an incredibly sensitive and intuitive approach to telling stories. As a director, he has the opportunity to bring out emotions between the lines. With the story of Umukt is his direction honest and personal. If producers can be combined with a director who is technically crafts.”
