Trump ‘hijacks’ Biden’s pardon and calls for release of January 6 rioters

Biden’s decision to pardon Hunter has since sparked controversy, with Biden’s defenders supporting the move as a fair act. However, critics – such as Colorado Governor Jared Polis – have accused him of prioritizing his family over the entire country.
Biden pardoned his son on Sunday, sparing him a possible prison sentence on federal felony gun and tax convictions, despite previously vowing not to use presidential powers for the benefit of his family.

Trump quickly denounced Biden’s announcement on Truth Social and wondered whether the pardon also applied to the January 6 rioters.
He wrote, “Does Joe’s pardon to Hunter include the J-6 hostages, who have been imprisoned for years now? What an abuse and miscarriage of justice!”
Notably, Trump and other Republicans have accused the Biden family for years of criminal corruption, particularly focused on Hunter’s foreign business dealings.

In June, Biden said he would not pardon his son following his convictions in Delaware and California.
Hunter stood trial in Wilmington, Delaware, on a weapons offense related to his attempt to purchase a gun in 2018 while battling substance abuse addiction. He pleaded not guilty to his charges in October 2023 after being indicted by Special Prosecutor David Weiss.
The case made headlines because it marked the first time the child of a sitting president faced a criminal trial.

During an interview with David Muir at the Normandy American Cemetery in France to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Muir asked the 82-year-old if he would accept the outcome of Hunter’s trial, to which Biden replied, “Yes.”
The news anchor then pressed whether Biden had ruled out the possibility of pardoning his only living son if convicted, to which Biden also replied, “Yes.”

In September, Hunter entered a surprise guilty plea to avoid a $1.4 million federal tax lawsuit, potentially putting him in prison for up to 17 years.
He said: ‘I will not expose my family to more pain, more invasions of privacy and unnecessary shame.
“Despite everything I’ve done to them over the years, I can spare them this, and that’s why I’ve decided to plead guilty.”

As recently as November 8, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed the idea of a pardon or clemency for Hunter, saying, “We’ve been asked that question several times. Our answer remains the same: no.”
Now Biden’s decision to pardon comes just weeks before Hunter was set to be sentenced for his firearms and tax debt convictions, and less than two months before Trump’s return to the White House.

The pardon marks the end of a lengthy legal saga for Hunter, who revealed in December 2020 that he was under federal investigation — shortly after his father’s election victory.
Biden said in his statement: “Today I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Department of Justice’s decision-making, and I kept my word, even when I looked back. son is selectively and unfairly prosecuted.

“No reasonable person looking at the facts of Hunter’s cases could come to any conclusion other than that Hunter was singled out solely because he is my son – and that is wrong.
“An attempt has been made to break Hunter – who has been sober for five and a half years, even in the face of persistent assaults and selective prosecution. By breaking Hunter, they tried to break me – and there’s no reason to do that. believe it will stop here.
Hunter filed a statement with the court accepting the pardon just hours after his father’s announcement.
