Trailer for ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman’: Marvel goes old school

Marvel has released the first trailer for the new animated series ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’.

The show follows a parallel timeline in which Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, is mentored by Norman Osborn, the alter ego of his nemesis the Green Goblin, instead of Tony Stark as in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Cast members include Hudson Thames as the titular web-slinger, Colman Domingo as Osborn, Kari Wahlgren as Aunt May and Hugh Dancy as Doctor Octopus. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will reprise their roles from the “Daredevil” Netflix series, and Paul F. Tompkins will take on the role of classic Marvel Comics villain The Wizard.

In the trailer we get a good look at two new Spider-Man suits: one suitably casual for a teenage Parker, and the other with a more traditional fit and a sleek black and white color scheme. There’s no shortage of action in this first look either. After busting some livestream bad guys, Parker takes their phones and points the camera at them trapped in a web. “Consider it a good deed from your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,” Parker says before turning the camera on himself. ‘That’s me, by the way. I’m Spider-Man.”

Spider-Man has been a big earner for Marvel since Tom Holland took over the role in 2016 with the release of “Captain America: Civil War.” Holland has since played the web-slinging hero five times. His latest film, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, released in 2021, became the seventh highest-grossing film of all time.

Before Spider-Man joined the MCU, the franchise was first helmed by Sam Raimi for Sony Pictures. The combination would produce three films starring Toby Maguire in 2002, 2004 and 2007. Sony would then reboot the series in 2012 with Andrew Garfield, and all three Spideys had a memorable reunion in ‘No Way Home’.

The team overseeing this new version of “Spider-Man” includes Jeff Trammell as head writer and Mel Zweer as supervising director. Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt and Trammell serve as executive producers.

“Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” premieres January 29. Watch the trailer below.
